I think your point about the floor vote is important. Many don't want to be recorded as yay or nay and then go home to defend it in their purple (or slightly red) districts.

Without the support of Pelosi and the DNC, probably not. And if what she's looking at to replace him is another AOC type, probably not happening. Just my guess, really.
Nadler has a personal vendetta against Trump that is driving his efforts to take Trump down and Pelosi can’t do much to stop that desire. It’s what drove him to accept his position. This was his opportunity to get back at his foe when they were both at odds in NY. Nadler lost and has been filed with revenge since then.
