I don’t know but the area of SC I live in has just as high-if not higher rates of inbreeding and these people claim to be Christians. There are several prominent people (Chairman of a local bank board for example) who have married their first cousins. It is not uncommon to hear “but my husband is my cousin on my mother’s side”. I kid you not- I have told my husband if I have anything to do with it our daughter will not marry anyone from here because of the inbreeding. And in case you are wondering- yes these people have some serious genetic and intellectual/psycotic issues that can be directly linked to too many common branches of the family tree. Once while I was waiting for my daughter to finish dance practice the grandmother of one of her classmates said “It’s ok if her mother and father were cousins, the British Royal family does it.” I told her the fact her son had married his cousin could possibly explain the reason her granddaughter had serious gross-motor skill problems (like walking into walls inexplicably).
I have said before they took Jeff Foxworthy serious when he said “go the a family reunion to pick up dates”- either that or they missed the fact he precluded that statement with “You might be a redneck if...”
