Jury convicts dad of Alison Lundergan Grimes for giving illegally to Senate campaign (KY)

A federal jury found two longtime Democratic operatives guilty Thursday of funneling illegal corporate campaign contributions into Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes’ 2014 U.S. Senate campaign, delivering another blow to a significantly weakened Kentucky Democratic Party.

The jury convicted former Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Lundergan, the father of Grimes, on 10 charges and Democratic political consultant Dale Emmons on 6 charges after federal prosecutors alleged they had a “concerted scheme” to funnel more than $200,000 into Grimes’ election efforts without seeking reimbursement from the campaign.

The most serious charges could each carry a maximum of 20 years in prison for each man. As the clerk read the verdict, someone among Lundergan’s supporters let out a soft cry.

J. Guthrie True, Lundergan’s attorney, said the defendants were “disappointed” by the verdict but knew they were taking a chance by taking the case to a jury. True said the verdict will be appealed.

“We would intend to take this appeal as high as possible,” True said.

The verdict, which the jury reached in less than 2.5 hours, delivers a blow to the political future of Grimes, who was once seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, although no evidence was presented that suggested Grimes knew about the illegal contributions.

It also wounds two Democratic Party stalwarts who have had a hand in campaigns since at least the ‘70s. Lundergan served two terms as chairman of the state party and built up control over a faction of the party. Emmons had worked on hundreds of campaigns from the state House to the U.S. Senate.

A federal jury found two longtime Democratic operatives guilty..

Gee, I should flick over to ABC/CBS/CNN/NBC to see breathless 24/7 coverage for the next six months.

Oh, wait. It said Democrat not Republican operatives.

It won’t be much longer and the Democrat party in Kentucky will be strong in Jefferson and Fayette counties and that’s it. And Fayette’s not all that strong for Dems any more.

His donation was personal, not funneled money and a tenth of the amount mentioned here. He was given a full pardon by DJT.

Oh yeah, like the other Dem family powerhouse in KY - the Beshears, the whole family is corrupt. The offspring are just like their parents. And, IMO, in cahoots with their parents.

Well, they own Jefferson County for sure. There is a record high per capita number of “coexist” bumper stickers, it’s nauseating.

And their perpetual congressional rep Yarmuth passed liberal several left turns back, barf.

Both of the convicted criminals have extensive ties to Greg Stumbo who was attorney general while they were pulling some of their shenanigans. He is running for the AG position again. Th AG has been filled by democrats since the civil war. Lundegren and Emmons would never have been investigated if it wasn't for the feds.

Kentucky is loosing over 1000 people per year to opioid addiction. Purdue pharma recently settled for $12 billion with 20 other states. The Beshears law firm negotiated separately for $24 million and got paid millions to screw Kentucky. Andy Beshear is the AG and is challenging Gov. Bevin next year.

Exactly. If Stumbo does not win the AG race, the Lundergan establishment will be completely out of power...for the first time in decades, as Grimes herself is term limited and Stumbo was ousted from the House (even as the incumbent Speaker) in the 2016 election.

I am not so sure about your last sentence, though...I believe the Beshears could have been instigators of that in order to damage Grimes as they are a rival faction of the Kentucky Democrat Party. I don’t know that...but I am far from the first or last person to find it an all too convenient coincidence on the timing of those prosecutions to push Grimes out of running for governor.
