ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Maine man convicted of raping and killing a former high school classmate was sentenced to 58 years in prison for the murder of 19-year-old Mikaela Conley and 30 years for her rape Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Jalique Keene was captured on surveillance video carrying 19-year old Mikaela Conley over his shoulder as she kicked her legs and later carrying her lifeless body to the woods where she was found dead.

Keene and Conley knew each other from Mount Desert Island High School. Keene killed Conley after she gave him a ride from Boston Logan International Airport on May 31, 2018.

During the sentencing, Judge Murray said Keene's lack of willingness to take responsibility for Mikaela Conley's death despite a video showing him doing so was chilling. Judge Murray said it was also chilling how Keene could show his face to Conley's mother, feigning concern for her daughter, just after killing her.

Prosecutors Dawn Corbett described the violent beating and strangling Keene inflicted on Conley before raping her. Prosecutors told the judge at the Superior Court in Ellsworth that they way Keene killed Conley demonstrated a total lack of respect for life. They mentioned that Keene had mitigating factors including his young age and a tragic history of childhood abuse.

Followup to yesterdays article - would have prefered the death penalty, but 58 years - if he serves it all - might do it. Hopefully he is dead within 6 months.

My guess:

They dated.

She felt friendly enough to pick him up at the airport, but had moved on.

He didn’t accept “moving on.”

The penalty should be death; With 58 years he might get out in 20? 25?

Keene has a criminal past that dates back to when he was 15 years old

I see this quite often on these real life crime TV shows. Women bring these guys in to try and help them and they pay for it with there lives. One on TV again yesterday.

Maine got rid of the death penalty in the ‘70s—the 1870s

Maybe I’m reading this wrong but isn’t it 58+30?
