The Pilgrims fled Britain because they were pretty much despised by nearly everyone. They basically said that the King’s church was full of sinners beyond any hope of redemption while they pretty much alone were preordained to go to Heaven. They tried Holland for a while, which tolerated pretty much everyone but Catholics, but found to their dismay that their kids were becoming Dutch.

Few today can imagine how important faith was to people 400 years ago. So to respectfully disagree with you, religion was the reason they left.
