I also have a BC but it is not good enough for the VA nor for a REAL ID. If your records are lost or destroyed, then there is nothing anyone can do, despite having the BC the hospital issued when you were born.

You get the certified birth certificates from the county where you were born.
We did it online in two different counties in two different states. Have a valid credit handy when you request them.
My wife got hers in a week, mine took 2 weeks.

Wow this is a clever idea on the surface, as others have pointed out here it is not something that will work out for us even if the Democrats agreed. It is likely that the gun registration parts of such a bill would remain intact forever, while the voter ID stuff would, of course, be struck down court somehow or other. There is a fix for that, which is to put a clause in the bill that says either the entire thing with Stan’s court scrutiny or the entire thing is invalid, including a physical and electronic destruction of all copies of either side of this thing.
No, what President Trump should do is to propose a bill that is a true compromise, unlike anything that has ever happened before in the gun rights arena. What I mean by that is that the gun control crowd has never actually given up anything, that there has never actually been a true compromise. They ask for 100, we get upset because it is an outrageous proposal, bargain them down to 50, and then we act like we won. The truth is we just lost 50. That is not compromise, that is slow suicide for the second amendment rights of all Americans. What needs to happen is that in return for registration, the NFA is repealed. Also, the 1968 gun control act is repealed. Nationwide concealed carry is mandated for anyone who registers. Let’s see how they like the idea of true compromise. They won’t, they will howl and squeal, but then we can explain that there has never before actually been a compromise on gun rights that contracted them in one area and expanded them in another.
Of course, I am 100% against the idea of registration, and I really don’t even like the idea of having such a horrible thing even discussed. Registration is the necessary pre-requisite to confiscation, which we all know to be the brass ring that the left is reaching for. Confiscation is a necessary prerequisite for the imposition of a Tierney and for mass occurs of political opponents or undesirable ethnic groups. That is just history, it is not speculation or hyperbole. Maybe, instead of having registration of firearms owners, there should be registration of those taking psychotropic drugs that have even a one in 1 million chance of causing someone to become psychotic. Maybe the psychiatrist who prescribed these medications should be held personally responsible for the actions of their patients, unless those patients are monitored in a very carefully crafted and supervised manner. That is probably a much better solution to these mass shootings then any kind of gun control, as the common denominator in at least 95% of these not perpetrated by Muslims is the use of psychotropic drugs by the perpetrator.

Bullbleep. My wife and I just moved to Texas from another state and got new drivers licenses (which required birth certificates). Both BC's from the 1940's. Both accepted without an eyeblink.
Once you have your records in hand take them to your local County Courthouse and have them registered, then a genuine copy will always be available. I did that with all my DD 214s and saved me a lot of trouble.
They used to accept births recorded in family Bibles, good luck with that today. However if you have a friend working in an area that approves your records it won't matter. People get all kinds of approvals with a family and friends plan, you just need to upgrade your friends circle. </s>

I don’t know where you live but in MA, NJ and SC my original (1942) BC was readily accepted at both MV and Town Hall.
My wife has a certified copy from St Louis and that was accepted as well without issue.
Am in WI; was born in NJ about the same time - but Cert is not acceptable for Real ID or Vet Admin.
Original old BCs (40-60s) are not acceptable for Real ID or VA.

In SC as of Jan of this yr a BC was accepted as one of the items of proof needed for both a Real ID and a D/L.
Perhaps it has changed since then.
