Column: Sen. Ted Cruz and other Republicans in Congress are ignorant about gun laws
Chicago Tribune ^ | SEP 04, 2019 | 5:36 PM | DAHLEEN GLANTON

It is obvious that Republicans in Congress don’t understand America’s gun problem. But Sen. Ted Cruz has taken that ignorance to a new level.

The GOP loves to point out, erroneously, that Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation, yet the murder rate is the highest. Neither point is accurate, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans, including Donald Trump, from spreading the lie.

Chicagoans are used to being the scapegoat for lawmakers who don’t have the guts to do the right thing when it comes to passing sensible gun legislation. But when self-serving politicians try to shirk their responsibility by misleading the public about how guns end up in the hands of killers, we have to speak up.

Thank you, Mayor Lightfoot, for shutting down Cruz. We’re fed up with this lying political culture that Trump is breeding in America.

In the aftermath of a mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, just weeks after the one in El Paso, the Texas lawmaker tweeted this on Monday: “Gun control doesn’t work. Look at Chicago. Disarming law-abiding citizens isn’t the answer.”

What he omitted was that both gunmen in Texas obtained their weapons legally. Most of the guns used in homicides in Chicago were obtained illegally. There’s a huge difference. To try to equate the two is ignorant and disingenuous.

Anyone notice that the national media is silent on Cruz and Lightfoot's Twitter exchange?

Normally, tweets from Washington officials get a story on the news. Cruz's tweetstorm should have been the #1 story (well, maybe #2 after Hurricane Dorian) but it isn't.

The obvious conclusion is that Dems and the Left do not want Chicago and other failed big cities brought into the gun debate.

Cruz should meet the Chitcogo Mare, and the author of this tripe, in the super dome where they can fight it out in a pool filled with lime jello.

Three kinds of bad laws: In-laws, outlaws and gun laws.

There should be only one code for the encapsulation of gun legislation, and that would have to do with the FULL education of every school child, and up through adult education, of the description, design, identification, care, feeding, grooming and proper and acceptable use of firearms of all kinds.

How can we KNOW, beforehand, which persons would use sidearms for malicious or deadly purpose, and which would not? That is where mass education effort comes in - acquaint EVERY person with the simple facts of what firearms ARE, then proceed with allowing them access to where they may handle them under controlled conditions.

People would fall, generally, into three groups. Those who recognize and respect what firearms are, and their purposes, those who would, from the very first, use the firearms as a means to intimidate and bully their acquaintances, neighbors and total strangers, and those who are so pathologically afraid of guns or weapons of any kind, they avert their eyes immediately and no rational argument will convince them the gun will not rise of its own will, aim itself at them and shoot them dead on the spot.

The first group would be amenable to further education and training in the proper care, feeding, grooming and storage of sidearms, and how to effectively use them for defense, by identifying the target, framing it, aiming the gun, and firing the weapon with a degree of accuracy and effectiveness.

The second group, once identified, should either be put into some kind of counseling, or under a lifetime prohibition against EVER acquiring, using or even coming into contact with weapons that could be used with malicious purposes, even it it is a knife, a baseball bat or just their hands on a rock or brick.

The third group, the perpetually frightened, should get instruction on how to avoid, evade or escape from situations where they may be threatened by another with ill intent, and also have them tattooed with their names and social security numbers somewhere on their bodies, in the worse case situation, to make identification much more quickly.

Almost all the recent shootings are copycat shootings for which the major media are to blame for.

If gun laws worked, no one would kill with an illegal gun. But gun laws not only don’t work, they increase crime.

Black people hate black people because they never, ever want to solve the root causes of violence and poverty within their communities. I am so f-ing tired of Whitey being blame for everything. I am just at a loss in how our greatest cities are run by total asshats.

Of course, liberals will never, ever, be convinced that legally-armed citizens would work to prevent much of this rampant crime. No amount of statistics or evidence to prove this can change their minds.

“Sensible gun legislation” is code for taking guns from conservatives so libturds can kill them more easily.

Most of the guns used in homicides in Chicago were obtained illegally....

If that is the case, then how would gun laws stop the homicides?

The imbecile who wrote this piece evidently didn’t get the word that the Odessa guy didn’t pass a background check, thus his gun was not legally obtained.

Chicago has some of the toughest “gun laws” in the U.S. However, these in charge there (ALL DEMOCRATS) are the ones at fault for the killings. All we hear from these POS’s is the need for more “gun laws”. But what they don’t say is that all their LAWS are against God-Fearing, Law-Abiding, Hard-Working American Citizens (Which the DemocRATS HATE). They don’t care about us. They only care about disarming us, so as to insure that we cannot defend ourselves, our families and friends from the DemocRATS friends and allies. That is the Criminal, Illegal Alien, Terrorists that vote for and help DemocRATS create more harm against us. The Chicago mayor is a complete utter “Stupid Lying Ugly Tramp: that is also a “Brazenly Ignorant Tramp Culling Hatred”. REMEMBER PEOPLE, Two things that the DemocRATS HATE. Armed American Citizens and The TRUTH. DemocRATS truth is only WHAT THEY LIE TO US ABOUT AS THEY ARE THE ELITISTS AND WE ARE THE PEONS. And all the DemocRATS ever do to us are they consider themselves the elitists, is to LIE and then PEE ON US!!!!!!

“No. FR is used to address the fake news.”

You are promoting their propaganda free of charge, and giving them free access to audiences they could never reach otherwise.

I’m sure they must appreciate the irony of a conservative news outlet such as FR distributing their hit pieces for them.

Hannity, Carlson and Ingraham do the same disservice - their shows are chalk full of fake news content from CNN, MSNBC, etc. - making their shows unwatchable for those of us trying to boycott fake news.

True, it is being shown under the pretext of mocking it, showing how outrageous it is, or how fake it is, but it is shown nonetheless, and being shown is all that is needed for propaganda to be effective.

It is a proven fact that when people hear a lie oft repeated, it makes an impression subconsciously, regardless of any countervailing pretext or subsequent retraction. This phenomenon is the basis for advertising strategies that repeat a message over and over again - no matter how annoying, or how absurd, it leaves an imprint - otherwise why would they spend billions of $ doing it?

If you think there is virtue to posting fake news on FR - that it somehow helps our cause - you are sadly mistaken. You are only helping their cause.

The ONLY way to get rid of the fake news is for people to ignore it, and spreading it here and on Hannity, etc. is no help whatsoever.

So you’d rather be like the DUmmies and read an echo chamber’s mutual masturbations?

This place has always had the mindless ruminations of the opponent posted for dissection and discussion. When did you realize that there are “otherthink” articles posted here?

I, and many others here appreciate having this kind of nonsense posted, it saves us from visiting sites that always post that type of drivel.

The Constitution has a specific provision for issuing Letters of Marque. This means that the writers of the Constitution envisioned the private ownership of cannons, which were the most destructive devices known to man at the time.
