What would surprise freepers is that many 1914 progressives, like The New Republic’s founder Herbert Croly, were Republicans.

There are still Republicans who are progressives. That movement has been engulfed by the Left. They are not natural allies, but the Left has hijacked the progressive labels.

The Globalist element in the GOP are largely what was once “Progressive”.

They do not believe in small government and in competition in industry and business. They believe in top down control.

I don’t.

It took me a long time to develop a clear political perspective on the 20th Century.

I think big government Republican Teddy Roosevelt got the Progressive ball rolling in 1901.

Except for six years under Calvin Coolidge, Ronald Reagan's first term, and the 1994-96 Newt Gingrich insurrection, that ball has crushed everything in its path for the last 120 years!
