The social services people and lawyers for my Aunt and Uncle took them to the cleaners before anyone else in the family knew what was going on. They were very simple hard working proud people who were too trusting. There are times I wish I had the morals and ethics of some famous Sicilian families.

Fortunately my Father was able to help but it was very painful and sad for everyone concerned. This happened decades ago when I was young. It’s sad to think that the same situation exists today.

Unfortunately that is all too common. There are ways to protect your assets in this type of scenario, but there are human spiders that are always waiting to take advantage of vulnerable elderly people. If there is a corrupt social service person teamed up with corrupt lawyers the damage they can do is terrible.

My parents have been repeatedly victimized. They have accumulated quite a bit during their lifetimes, but in the past few years they have been repeatedly taken advantage of, mostly by small time losers just out looking for vulnerable people who can be fleeced. Part of the problem is that they both are declining cognitively and are afraid of having their ability to make their own financial decisions taken away, so they are highly secretive about their situation. Lawyers and con artists can smell this type of thing from a mile away.
