I get your point about “millions of x don’t do this,” that “most ys are x” and “most xs are y” are different statements.

But, assuming you agree, that still leaves the significant increasing rate of these events since Columbine, or maybe San Ysidro, to explain. To what should we attribute it? Even though the number of people killed in these events is a tiny fraction of American murder victims overall, let alone the American population as a whole, does the seeming rising number of “bad seeds” need an explanation?
