I grew up in NYC in the 1950s and the paper always had maps overlaid with the zone of certain death from the latest Soviet nuke. They tested the sirens every month.
We had get under the desk drills and use your hands to protect your spinal
cord twice a month.
I was ten. I had nightmares then, and every once in a while I still do.

For some reason they never really bothered me and we were not that far from Cuba. I can understand kids being scared by having bomb drills but over the weather?? That is parents and liberal teachers instilling unnecessary fear into kids.
