The Trump administration Opens a New Window. proposed new rules to limit access to food stamps on Tuesday – a move that officials said would end benefits for about 3.1 million people – by closing a loophole that allows states to automatically enroll residents already receiving other welfare benefits.
“This proposal will save money and preserve the integrity of the program,” Sonny Perdue, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, said in a conference call. “SNAP should be a temporary safety net.”
According to data provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Opens a New Window. , about 40 million low-income people participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in 2018. Under current rules, a family of three who uses them makes less than $28,000 per year. The newest change would result in an annual budgetary savings of $2.5 billion and restrict less needy people from qualifying for food stamps, according to multiple media outlets.

Our local welfare secretary quit after realizing the clients were making more sitting on their couches than she was working 40 hours a week.
The program is riddled with criminal behavior, from social service Obama appointees handing out candy that shouldn’t be to the receivers who use it to barter for cash to use elsewhere, gambling, booze and drugs. Strict enforcement is need at the ground levels to ensure a more adequate accountability.
I see non English speaking Hispanics with many kids loading up their grocery carts, then breaking out an EBT card.

Well and truly said, and every word of it. Eligibility for free stuff should be available only to the certifiably helpless. ALL others should be required to work for their sustenance. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Nothing encourages ambition as well as hunger. A major contributing factor to the welfare scam are the minimum wage laws.
The gist of this, is that it selectively removes the richest 3 million people from food stamps - not some random cull.
It eliminates a loophole, where people who did not meet the income/asset requirements for food stamps were automatically signed up for them without checking.
We are at an extreme low for unemployment, and the economy needs workers - so some of those lazy folks need to be prompted to get off the couch.
Require so many hours of work I don’t care if it’s being a trash collector for roadside trash for 20 hrs a week. Unless the person is really truly disabled and to old.
My SS check disqualifies me from food stamps. And I sure don’t get over $4,000 a month. More like $1,200. And I have to buy some of my Meds now and I’m supposed to have Fantastic health care. Medicare/Tricare Life. They keep cutting meds off the Formulary I need, and leave on the crap I can’t take. All because they put them OTC. Well that 80 MG Nexium I need is not Cheap. I concur....IF it can be shown that welfare doesn’t violate A1S8, 5th, 9th, 10th a/o 13th A.
MUCH easier to just terminate the illegality of it all & ‘save’ a bunch of taxpayer $$ and restore a BUNCH of Citizen Rights.
Unemployment is extremely low and dropping.
Lots of places are beginning to approach the Democrats’ coveted pay rate of $15 per hour.

Yes, using an EBT card and then loading the groceries into a new Suburban 4X4 with $2000 worth of rims and tires on it.
