Idol (and idle) worship.
It does not matter if the shroud is real or fake.

There have been numerous endeavors, using 21st century technology, to make images based on the
3-D information encoded in the Shroud. And if this is a "Nordic" image...

Jesus left us a relatively few number of physical signs and other miracles for the doubting Thomas types, those who have no, or struggle with their faith. These are just one of the many pathways for conversion.
During his short ministry, he miraculously saved and healed many. These acts instantly converted many. The Shroud is one of these unexplained miracles. It was not meant for people like yourself who enjoy a perfect faith in Jesus.

It does not matter if the shroud is real or fake. Perhaps not to the likes of you and me.
Perhaps I would be less inclined to be an agnostic if it were proven real.
I'm inclined to think that proving it a fake, or of just another poor soul crucified by the Romans, would not shake the faith of a true believer. Maybe it would?
