Official East German government documents recovered after the fall of the Wall showed that about one-in-eight East Germans were Stasi informants.They also showed that kids informed on their parents and that PARENTS INFORMED ON THEIR KIDS!
I'd bet my last nickel that Frau Merkel was a Stasi informant.
Also...a few years ago I started (but didn't finish) a book called "Stasi".In it,Simon Weisenthal,the famous concentration camp survivor and Nazi hunter,is quoted as saying that in his opinion the Stasi was *worse* than the Gestapo!
