I had a very similar experience with my father. He was in a coma, no brain activity, "could-live-like-this-for-years-are-you-sure-you-want-us-to-feed-him...."
Yes feed him.
10 days later I walked into his room and said "Hi dad". Imagine my surprise when he said "Hi" back! We had the best relationship for the last 2 years of his life.
