The Goon Show ran an elevator up it back in the 1950s.

I wonder if there is an elevation at which a normal combustion engine no longer works. I guess a jet engine forces all the oxygen you need to burn fuel, but what would a car do at highest elevation?

I was wondering if this had some contingent military purpose.

Don’t know. You can drive in Boulder, which is a mile up. Taos NM is almost 7000 ft. Nearby park at about 12. Cars can run that high w/adjustment.

Everest at 29k is probably a no go. But it would be nice to see how far you could get before your car konks out.

Even without an O2 problem, there’s the grade...

It's not like you'd have to push it back down.

Militarily this, or any tunnel, would not be hard to shut down.

As thin as the air is at that altitude breathing could become a real problem if there is much buildup of car exhaust in the tunnel. I hope they installed a good ventilation system.

Roger that.

When the PA Turnpike shuts one tube and runs 2 way traffic best to shut off the A/C when you turn on the headlights and breathe as little and as lightly as possible.

An escalator would let you have more of a mountain climbing experience. Just sayin’.
