most of these refineries have been in there current location 75-100 years. The town and cities have grown up around them. Many originally had buffer areas around them, but most have not kept that space. It's sort of like New Orleans. They just got used to the disrepair, old levees, and various risks creeping up until one day, WHAM!

Actually, when I was growing up, it was a neighborhood full of WWI, WWII, and Korean war veterans.
Flags on every porch. 35 rowhomes on each side of the street.
It really was a nice place. Until the “blockbusters” real state assholes destroyed the neighborhood and housing prices.

RE MOVE:
They were a bunch of black commie assholes that harrassed every person that walked past their “compound”.
RE “supposed police brutality against blacks. “
Most of which was brought on by their own attitudes.
Like I said... when he was mayor, I didn’t have to escort my grandmother to the supermarket with a baseball bat.

MOVE harrassed the whole neighborhood, playing loud music all hours of the night, living like dirty hippie communards, doing illegal drugs and quite obviously mistreating the group's children, none of whom went to school, and obviously wouldn't have been a good influence on the other little kids on the street, even assuming they could have gone out to play. I still think about little Birdie Africa, the one child who survived. He would have been in his 47 now, except that
he drowned in a hot tub a few years ago on a Carnival Cruise ship. I read an article years ago that his biological dad had taken him after the firebombing and was raising him normally in the Jersey suburbs. He looked good then, in his teens. A tragic life and a tragic death.

Rizzo was corrupt. But he was the best democrat mayor Philly ever had. He supported the police and loved his city. His brother was the worst Fire Commissioner ever.

They were awful just in a different way. Frank Rizzo is like MLK,Jr. The myth is way different than the reality. He was loved in Philly for some reason...but, he did support his police and was the last philly mayor that actually gave a damn about the people. His brother, the Fire Commissioner, totally sucked and sent his men into that ‘75 refinery fire when he wouldn’t go in. Coward.

My father was a firefighter and I remember that fire clearly as we waited outside to see if he came out (and he did). My brother Jack has the ring and I keep telling him I get it when he dies and it will go to my kids.
Joe Rizzo was a disgrace and his brother Frank is only remembered fondly because he was the last philly mayor that actually loved philly, its people, and supported the police.

Rizzo was a kick ass police chief, but I think being mayor was a little off from his base talents.
Anyway, I remember seeing the 75 fire... drove past it at night and it was pretty dramatic.

I’d forgotten about that, but it’s true!
