McConnell vows to 'vigorously' oppose Moore's Senate bid

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) signaled on Thursday that he and his allies will actively work to oppose Roy Moore's bid for Alabama's Senate seat after the conservative firebrand announced he was jumping into the race.

"We'll be opposing Roy Moore vigorously," McConnell told reporters after returning to the Capitol after a White House briefing on Iran.

McConnell's comments come after he warned, during an interview with the Associated Press shortly before Moore announced his bid, that he would "oppose him in every way."

Moore announced on Thursday afternoon that he would launch a bid for Alabama's Senate seat after previously winning the party's nomination in 2017, only to lose to now-Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in a contentious special election.

His candidacy is a national nightmare for Republicans. They blame him for losing what they view as a safe GOP seat in a deeply red state that President Trump won easily in 2016.

Moore lost the race after facing multiple accusations of pursuing sexual and romantic relationships with teenage girls decades ago when he was in his 30s; he has denied any wrongdoing.

Alabama voter here.

McConnell created this problem. He came to Alabama and threw all of that money behind Luther Strange, who very few in the state wanted. Then he started the mess with Roy Moore.

I don’t think Roy Moore did anything wrong. However, that does not mean I support Moore. I don’t.

Mitch McConnell needs to get his butt out of Alabama. He will screw this up again.

I agree. States like Kentucky, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama can do a lot better. The GOPe types in those states rose to power by overthrowing very corrupt Democrat establishments. Ideologically, they were and are mushy middle of the road types. They are left of their constituents. Howard Baker and Lamar Alexander are the archetypes. That era is over. The issues have changed, the world itself has changed.

Don’t you find it rather strange that when Moore was the candidate all these women came out of the woodwork at the right time? Sort of like with Kavanaugh. How come they didn’t continue to persue a criminal charge of rape? They did their duty and destroyed a REAL conservative. You can pile on him all you want but I don’t like seeing this display. I can’t stand Bitch. I’d rather have Moore any day of the week. Any man that stands for God and His commandments is ok with me. There are more important things than politics...like taking a stand against the establishment.

One more for Team Turtle. Moore can find a new hobby, something he’s better at.

OK, but you are not going to get Moore.

If Moore is the nominee. you are going to get Doug Jones for SIX LONG YEARS. He will not have to pretend anymore.

If the people of Alabama chose Moore to represent them, Congress needs to shut up...

Stranger things have happened in politics. You never know. Not only did they torpedo Moore they got Bannon as well. The establishment doesn’t want true conservatives. They’ll do ANYTHING to destroy them. And many people are fooled by their tactics.

Moore had his vindication with the USSC decision on the Bladensburg Peace Cross. It is time to retire from public life.

Historically speaking Mitch McConnell has been more RINO than Republican, as was the case with John McCain and is the case with Mitt Romney. To that extent, I supported Matt Bevin's attempt to oust McConnell in Kentucky years ago. Assuming this is not fake news, and that McConnell is truly vocally opposed to Moore, this may actually provide genuine conservatives incentive to support Moore.

“I’m with Trump and McConnell on this.

Likewise. And I will be voting in Alabama.”

As will I. No shortage of out of state “experts” on Alabama politics. :-)

Moore will probably be generally disregarded based on the 2016 fiasco. However it’s early we also need to see who else jumps in.

Yeah, when he slows down on the one thing he’s been good at, it’s really a problem. I think his somewhat impressive performance on the judiciary is motivated mainly by his desire to stick it to Harry Reid. That’s fine, but let’s keep it moving.

If he can’t win in Alabama, he needs to give it up and find something else to do with his life.
