You may be misremembering. Esso/Exxon's slogan has always been "Put a Tiger in your Tank," not "a tiger in every tank.."

You are right. Reminds me of an old joke my father used to tell. A swarm of bees was heading south for the winter and decided to stop at a Conoco station to gas up.

All except one bee who had to go to the Esso station across the highway. "Well," said the leader of the swarm. "that's the way it goes. There has to be an Esso Bee in every crowd."
