White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said late Thursday afternoon that the US is still moving forward with tariffs on Mexico, following a day of continued negotiations between high-ranking US officials and their Mexican counterparts.

Sanders, in a statement, said the US "position has not changed, and we are still moving forward with tariffs at this time."

President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs are set to go into effect Monday. The White House has indicated that the US intends impose a 5% tariff on all Mexican imported goods immediately if no agreement is reached by then, with the levy rising steadily each month to a cap of 25% by October if no deal is reached.

So a tariff on goods coming into the USA. Who pays for that?
The USA purchaser or the across the border seller?

Ultimately, it's the cross-border producer who pays when a company inside the United States realizes it can produce the same product and sell it domestically 'tariff-free' for much less.

TARIFFIC!

the importer.

Some would have you believe the buyer always pays, but that is not true.

OFTEN the Seller/Importer just eats it and takes it off their bottom line.

“So a tariff on goods coming into the USA. Who pays for that?”

Are you being intentionally obtuse or you really don’t know?

It’s essentially a tax on everything that is imported to US from Mexico. It will raise prices on those items which will make the Mexican product unattractive price wise to the consumer making another choice preferable.

If it’s an item that can’t be imported form another source.....Just don’t buy it. Pretty simple really.

Thanks. I assumed it would raise the price in the USA thus
the consumer here would pay more if they continued to buy.

Imports in Goods (Billions of Dollars)

        China Canada Mexico Japan Germany
2018	539.5	318.5	346	142.6	125.9
China, Mexico, Germany hit records.

Mexico was #3 on our import list.

Usually the tariff has to get up around 50% before there is any interest in moving production back to the USA. Our "Cost of Democrats" is just far too high to make new large-scale production of most goods cost-effective.

But many Mexican products are agricultural and already have domestic alternatives, so even Trump's small tariffs put Mexican exports at grave risk.

You have to have a hell of a bottom line to eat a 25% tariff.

Yes. Unfortunately we will also have to start drinking Scotch instead of Tequila. Although I must admit, had a shot of high end Tequila once that might as well have been scotch lol.

We import about $30 billion a month from Mexico.

1st Month at 5% = $1.5 billion
2nd Month at 10% = $3.0 billion
3rd Month at 15% = $4.5 billion
4th Month at 20% = $6.0 billion
5th Month at 25% = $7.5 billion
6th Month... alright already, they’ve paid for the wall.

What does is make Mexico less
competive as Americans shop
for cheaper alternatives. Or
they will stop purchasing Mexican
goods altogether.

either way , the pain comes at the register. Most of us will only notice the price gap shrink (just a bit) between “made over there” and “made over here”.

I value a free market, Just finding it harder to have a free market when it has become dominated by major players filling bureaucratic bank accounts.

looks like the Libs will finally get a big centralized government that limits freedom by forcing us to use government to stop them...
