So, why did Trump go straight to the attorney general?
Why did he not go the normal route through the director of national intelligence?
(I was careful not to plagiarize this question)

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats has been rumored to be the author of the anonymous editorial to the New York Times. He denied it, but who knows?
Also it's been recently rumored that Trump was going to fire him but Pence asked Coats to stay through the summer.

So, why did Trump go straight to the attorney general? AG has some authority to declassify and can ask the DNI to do so. The main reason is that the AG can bring charges for lying, leaking, and the crimes Trump refers to as treason. He uses the treason word to give the AG more power in getting confessions.
The media asked him who he thought was treasonous. At first he said he didn't know. Then he said Comey, McCabe and "people higher up". Then added Strzok and his lover.
