Up North we think Jimmy Carter was basically saying "Think of something really Southern -- that’s how Southern I am” and it seems to have worked for him, but in general, if you want to be the first of your group you don't emphasize how typical a member of the group you are.
Buttigieg isn't really a serious contender, but he's going to get all the publicity of a serious candidate, and the spotlight isn't something he can walk away from.
