many, many freepers I would guess are taking advantage of govt benefits one way or another..SS/Medicare/pension checks( including military)/pension benefits/disability/free parking/ etc etc..

I read the estimate that over 50% of Americans are on the govt teet so why would we expect sound frugal leadership at the top?....politicos know who butters their bread

These days, just about everyone has an opinion. Not in 1942.

I would suspect that the 40% are ignorant about socialism. Socialism sounds great when it is portrayed as this benevolent government that doles out free stuff and spreads the wealth around. Little do most understand that the free stuff comes with a steep price both economically and in lost freedom. The hand that doles out few stuff is an iron fist. Why is no one looking at Venezuela where socialism has left ordinary Venezuelans foraging in garbage cans in a totalitarian state.

Is spending federal money on a border wall a “socialist” program? It’s certainly not “free market.” It is a statist solution. This stupid definition of socialism game is a distraction. GOPe types would like to get the debate back to something comfortable for them, like campaigning on a 2% capital gains tax cut or something. Meanwhile, a few hundred invaders came over while I was typing this ...

I think the wall is a public works project. Like highways, dams and such. It is a proper function of government.

TThe interpretation and the headline are totally misleading. The data do not support either conclusion:

The choice of questions completely drives this survey, not the choice of socialism over capitalism or free market. “Environmental Protection” is not necessarily a “free market” type of choice to most people’s mind. They frequently don’t make such a choice when buying retail products on environmental concerns unless the government forces it.

Regulation for the public good is not socialism. Nor is protecting the Rights of the people to privacy online. Neither of those is an economic system.

The questions that even encroaches on government involvement on the economy are those which have to do with taking over the healthcare of people and setting wages and making those decisions for them without the involvement of the market place. Setting wages by fiat is a classic error socialist make, having a committee of ignorant elites try to set value equivalents to society between brain surgeons and ditch diggers. The blind hand of the market does a fine job of doing it, but ignorant elites will never figure it out fairly. They can never divorce themselves from their prejudices.

Merit doesn’t get promotions in socialist societies, instead, who you know and Party purity and adherence to political dogma wins promotion. Relatives of Party committee people get promoted over quality candidates, regardless of knowledge. A good example was shown in a documentary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster I saw last night. The overall head engineer of the four nuclear reactor Chernobyl plant was a Party appointee who had ZERO nuclear energy training. . . But he had the right Party connections for the post. Similarly, the Soviet head of the Nuclear Commission did not even know how a Nuclear Power Plant worked. . . Not even how fission worked. . . he was not stupid, but he was very politically connected in the Politburo. He did not understand the dangers of radiation.

These party apparatchiks were blowing smoke up the skirts of the Central Committee in the Kremlin for days after the accident. . . “Everything is under control, Comrades. It’s just a fire in the roof, Comrades. Radiation is about what you’d get from six X-rays a year, nothing to worry about, Comrade Secretary.” The low dosimeter rating they reported was based on the single dosimeter they could find that only went up to 3.6 mSV/Hr max. . . So that’s what they reported. They didn’t know the real reading was in the hundreds of mSv/hr.

The KGB was shadowing the investigators and if they spoke out of turn, they could get arrested. That’s what happens when Socialism takes over. Of course, socialists will say that was because the wrong socialists were in charge. They wouldn’t do that that because their socialist motives are pure. Right, sure. . . Socialism has never worked in the past because the right people haven’t been in charge. Just let THEM do it and it will work perfectly!

My guess would be that elderly and especially poorer elderly are being over sampled in polling data, and they are also more reliant on social programs.

There really is no solution to the problems facing pollsters and those politicians who plot their strategy based on polls will face the same fate as Hillary, who relied on tainted polling results rather than boots on the ground to make her decisions of where to campaign in the final days of the 2016 election.

This is not just an American pollster problem... It plagues pollsters in other countries too. Canada has had many recent elections with results that were way off and Australia just had a national election where the polls were wrong again.
