That could be my biography, too, except I started working at that age wielding a shovel for twelve and a half cents an hour. Never a problem getting a job until over fifty.

What happened at fifty? Demand for ditch-diggers dry up? Or your back give out?

12-1/2 cents an hour?! Man, you must be old!

Regards,

My dad was a contractor and put me to work on a shovel while I was in junior high. Minimum union wage for digging dirt at that time was twelve and a half cents an hour.

I didn’t say I dug ditches for the rest of my life, just that I never had a problem staying employed.

As for at fifty, that seems to be when age discrimination kicks in. The experience, skill, and wages necessary to purchase them as opposed to hiring someone much younger but much lower wages starts to balance in favor of less wages.
