I agree, Duval could have played Pug Henry and done well with the role. He was pretty good as Ike in that miniseries.
RE MacMurray:
Big difference from the the Fred MacMurray of “My Three Sons” fame.
Mark of a great actor. To be believable in ANY role.

Also became VERY wealthy because of real estate investments.A very sharp guy.
.
He was great in the wonderful “Double Indemnity” with Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson.
Amazing movie. One of my favorites.

Yes, I’d not argue that.
Hoffman is amazing. From The Graduate to Marathon Man to Rain Man to Hook... he has been outstanding.
I have that one on my Watch List.
Will watch on my next flight :-)
See my tagline.
True. Might I also throw out that Lee Marvin as Horrible played his small part perfectly. Marvin was a marine in the Pacific theater and was injured at the battle of Saipan. He had that attitude of the sullen seaman down perfectly.
Cpl. Atcherly: Yes, sir
Bull Meechum: What's your name Corporal?
Cpl. Atcherly: Atchley, sir.
Bull Meechum: Atchley do you realize that several Marines were killed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor while taking craps?
Cpl. Atcherly: No, sir.
Bull Meechum: A fighting man must be vigilant to surprise attack no matter where he is. The survival of our nation depends on the readiness of Marines all over the world. Also more importantly, you only wiped yourself twice - grossly insufficient. Right now, germs with names you can't even pronounce are preparing to launch a devastating attack that will render you helpless in the defense of your country... Do you read me?
Cpl. Atcherly: Yes, sir!
Bull Meechum: Good... now I'm Jones, Colonel John J. Jones I'm only here for the day. I fly around the country testing the readiness of troops for combat. This is a strictly confidential test, classified top secret, tell no one Atchley... and if you ever attack a senior officer again I'll have you court-martial’d
Cpl. Atcherly: But you attacked me, sir
Bull Meechum: DISMISSED! Good luck in your career. Be proud Atchley, be proud of yourself and of the Corps... now get out!
Bull Meechum: Looking in a mirror: You silver tongue bastard, shame on you.
Make way... for a fighter pilot!
Ahh, “The Great Santini”...
Duvall is the best....
In Claudette Colbert's... dreams--
And in... her reality.
Better days, better times, better actors... better movies.
You obviously get it.
