Chinas state-run media outlets have come out in force this week after keeping relatively quiet in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trumps surprise announcement of tariff increases on Chinese goods.
Whether its the mouthpiece of the Communist Party or the national television broadcaster, the latest commentary exudes confidence about Chinas ability to stand up to the U.S. Thats in contrast to a more muted press in preceding weeks. In an environment of tight government control of what messages are allowed to surface, the shift can shed light into what Chinese leaders are thinking about the drawn out trade negotiations.
I expect it was ordered by the top leadership to forward the narrative of the U.S. as bully and China as victim, said Scott Kennedy, director for the project on Chinese business and political economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Putting the talks in broader normative terms gives (Beijing) leverage I cant make big concession because my society will be angry but it also makes it harder for both sides to dispassionately find common ground, Kennedy added.
Regarding the trade war instigated by the U.S. side, China made its attitude clear early on: Unwilling to fight, but not afraid to fight; must fight when necessary, he said in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation. (If the U.S. wants to) talk, our door is wide open; (if the U.S. wants to fight), we will accompany to the end. Having experienced more than 5,000 years of disturbances, what kind of battle formation have the Chinese people not seen?
A few hours later, the Ministry of Finance published four lists of U.S. goods set for tariffs ranging from 5% to 25%. The total targeted amount of imports is $60 billion

“the trade war instigated by the US...”
Yeah, with that lie every thing workd.
read that China had 3.5 trillion dollar war chest elsewhere. If they don’t create wealth with it then that will go down the drain $2700/person.
the trade war instigated by the US...
Yeah, with that lie every thing workd.

China, you started it when you took advantage and stole our secrets, our technology and we are ending it. Eff off.
China BACKTRACKED on seven major parts of previous agreements.
BACKTRACKED.
Whiners.

Bring it losers.
Your employees will earn 40-60% less and will object.
China screaming. Democrats whining. RINO Republicans opposed. Academics and journalists berating. Chamber of Commerce angry.
Trumps tariff policy must be good.
I think China is in a difficult position. Their entire economy is over leveraged and, therefore, unstable. They can’t afford even a one percent drop in any category without either adding huge loans to that category or throwing thousands of workers out of work. They are terrified of social unrest. Trump has all the cards here and he knows it. They aren’t dealing with a Clinton or Obama who will cave. They are dealing with Bart Maverick.
Any agreement must include Chinese reimbursement for farmers’ loss of sales, full respect for trade secrets and compensation for intellectual property usage.
It’s great.
Now let's see... China is imposing tariffs on $60 bil of U.S. imports -- and the U.S. is imposing tariffs on $300 bil of Chinese imports. How exactly is China going to come out on top in this 'war'?
The Chinese tactic is obvious: target products that hurt economic sectors that support Donald Trump! Farmers, for example.
How do communist commissars know how to discern Democratic voting blocks? They get help from experts like John Kerry. And, too, the Democrap Party can refuse to vote relief for hurting farmers.
Trump needs to appeal to American patriotism and sacrifice. After all, aren't our young 'best' - and their families - sacrificing in military demands around the world? Winning a war requires sacrifice... and Dem traitors can be exposed for what they are!
We can win this war if we stand firm and accept the consequences.
Yep, all of the right parties are crying so Trumps trade policies must be good for the rest of us. More winning!
Yeh, their newest hit song “Running Scared”. The days of China getting rich ripping off the US are coming to a screaming halt just like their economy. In a trade war they lose big and they know it.
I'm thinking Midnight Oil's "Your Dreamworld Is Just About To End"
