I've heard of all of those but Abzug; do you mean Bella? What did she do?
Bella Savitsky Abzug was a top Soviet asset/operative in the US since her days in college and the National Lawyers Guild/International Association of Democratic Lawyers (about 1947 - a Soviet legal front), and government investigators said that both she and her husband, Martin Abzug, were secret members of the Communist Party USA.
Interestingly, the evidence for this has not been found in the National Archives though the govt investigators saw it in Congressional files which are now stored there. Several attempts were made by both communists and their dupes to get into these files (including those on people who became members of Congress), and Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich) another Soviet asset/top Congressional supporter of CPUSA and SWP fronts and causes, tried to have all the files of the House Committee on Un-American Activities/House Internal Security Committee destroyed in 1975.
He knew what his file would say, as well as that of Abzug, Sen. Cranston, Rep. Charles O. Porter, Leon Panetta’s mentor, longtime id. CPUSA member, Rep. Hugh DeLacy (D-CA), and others would reveal going back as far as 1934. Rep. Samuel Dickstein, 1934, was a paid Soviet NKVD agent while in Congress (Alan Weinstein, “The Haunted Wood” has a whole chapter on his treason).
Bella’s record on supporting communism was never in doubt, and a friend of mine who talked at her memorial service when she died told me that there were no doubts that Abzug was a Communist (and this person, of very good character, was a liberal, but a sane one).
If the FBI files on her are ever opened, it should resolve any question about Abzug being a CPUSA member and Soviet asset.
Thanks, I thought she was just a dingbat New York feminist...
A lot of the files related to McCarthy’s targets are also “missing”, as are some related to Clinton associates.
