Boo Hoo.
I graduated with $7.49 to my name.
Could have eaten for a few days with that, even at todays prices.
Rice, Oatmeal, Grits, tuna fish, Ramen, Raisins, You can make it work
College students would say:"Hey after the first two lattes and one of those artichoke quiche things at Panera I'm back to starving. And what about my bottles of natural spring water and gluten free rice crackers?"
By the way, almost every morning I make myself delicious grits. Thanks for the shout out for that fine product.
My GD got a 100 recipes w/Top Ramen as a gift for graduation.
Beans, pb&j sandwich, eggs, potatoes and pasta. Some brands of canned veggies are still 50 cents.
My first semester in college... back in 1973, I had $66 in my checkbook a guitar and a 10 speed. Even then I was desperately underfunded. Pops didn’t give a rip... and it was my $66 not his. I learned a big lesson. I really did spend my money foolishly the summer prior to that fall. Big mistake.
I pulled some money together during Christmas break but it was still hard times.
The room and board was handled. No snacks, soft drinks nothing. Mom set me up with toiletries and laundry supplies. Pops was right up there the biggest tightwads known to man. Some of it rubbed off.
I fed 3 boy and self working a job that paid $3.50 a hr. Clipped coupons, ate what was on sale, lots of Mac N cheese, hot dogs, spaghetti without meat. Clothes came out of rummage sales, couldn’t get child support collected as he ran out of state and I wasn’t living with an crazy man who wanted to abuse my boys. I went hungry many days so they could eat. Worked sick. My boys are grown, they learned the same work ethic. Eldest puts in 70-80 hrs a week as a manager. Youngest what ever OT he can get. Each has only 1 child, the eldest is nearly 18 yrs old, eldest makes his work for his car ins, phone, youngest has a 19 month old, wife is going to nursing school.
GET A JOB after school if you plan to eat. Wait tables, wash dishes for 4 hrs a day, even tutor for pay.
