Pelosi: Democrats May Have ‘No Choice’ But to Impeach Trump

Tuesday at the “Time 100 Summit” during a question-and-answer session in New York City, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said the House may have “no choice” but to impeach President Donald Trump.

Pelosi said, “I do believe impeachment is one of the most divisive forces — paths we could go down to in our country. But if the facts, the path of fact-finding takes us there we have no choice but we are not there yet.”

The difference is that Clinton did actually commit offenses and obstruct justice. Trump did not.

Well, we shall see how it plays out.

Wow. Great stuff. I don’t watch TV (except for Highway thru Hell and Heavy Rescue) so I don’t see the news.

Thank you very much. We can dream that the bad guys will get brought to justice.

Sad to hear “Whitewater” which is 1) exciting to remember with all the Rush show memories and FR posts on it at that time
and 2) depressing to remember because the bad guys skated.

No. US Constitution, Article 1, Section 3 states:

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

Of course that stipulation is probably true only for Republicans in today’s political climate. The illustrative case is Alcee Hastings, who was impeached and convicted as a US District Judge but nevertheless subsequently elected to Congress in flagrant violation of the plain text of the Constitution.

Andrew Johnson became President after Lincoln was assassinated.

He was a democrat who ran with Lincoln on a, “union ticket” but was opposed by Republicans because he favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union.
Republicans wanted to exclude legislators from southern secessionist states and impeached him but, failed to convict him by one vote in the senate.
He ultimately left the Presidency but returned to the senate from TN.
