Both psychopaths and narcissists have many outwardly similar behaviors but psychopaths have hardly any emotions whilst narcissists have deeply repressed emotions. ‘Malignant narcissists’ (overtly or covertly destructive and exploitative) are difficult to distinguish from psychopaths.

Psychopaths lack shame, fear, empathy for others and an inner sense of right and wrong (a conscience). In neurotypicals these act as internal boundaries. Psychopaths have no such internal boundaries. Instead they observe what others consider to be normal behaviour and reluctantly mimic it in order to stay hidden. In reality they see boundaries as inconveniences and challenges. They feel powerful and in control when they undermine, get round or break individual or group boundaries.

Psychopaths can act in outwardly ‘good’ ways but they have no inner ‘goodness’ driving their behaviours. This is an almost impossible concept for neurotypicals ('normies') to understand.

A very good way to get our head round the concept of psychopathy is to imagine a psychopath as a friendly crocodile in clothes. Would we expect a crocodile to be ‘good’ inside? Professionals who’ve spent their lives researching psychopaths have compared them to machines, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and spiders (Cleckley, Labowski, Babiak, Hare). Note the two underlying themes of coldness and reflex behaviours. Their personality disorder means that psychopaths have a fairly limited and predictable set of potential responses.
