Patagonia tells banks and oil companies that they can no longer buy co-branded vests

Patagonia's iconic "power vest" is a favorite for co-branded company swag, but the company has quietly enacted a new policy that shuts out oil, drilling, dam construction, etc. companies" as well as some "financial institutions" on the grounds that they are "environmentally damaging."

Instead, the company is partnering with mission-oriented B-corps, and companies engaged in "outdoor sports that are relevant to the gear we design, regenerative organic farming, and environmental activism."

Patagonia has become explicitly political in the years since the Trump election, backing an organization whose mission is to defend public lands with the fervor of the NRA. The company has always advocated for democratic fundamentals, giving employees the day off on election days.

But the cotton candy is woven to make the vests ...

So you are saying the vests are edible?

That changes everything.

Is a ‘power vest’ akin to a suicide vest?

As in wear one to work and commit career suicide?

I must be out of touch. I’ve never even heard of Patagonia let alone their “Power Vests”. I guess I haven’t missed much. Yawn...

I’ve never heard of them either and I spent my life working outside in the elements.

My guess is it is yuppie gear worn mostly by fags who want to pretend they are tough.

Patagonia was once a rich agricultural region in a country that was once one of the ten wealthiest nations on earth in 1900 and is now a basket case due to socialism.

I don’t remember anything about reducing customer base as a good strategy in my marketing class. Who knew...

Of course the vests are edible. In Libland, the rocks are chocolate bonbons, trees have saltwater taffy for bark, and dirt is made of brown sugar.

I did a web seach. Found this:

“The change aligns with the company’s mission: “We’re in business to save our home planet.” The popular outdoor retailer, which sells everything from sleeping bags to alpine pants to its famous fleeces, made headlines in 2018 for donating its $10 million tax cut to environmental groups.

Over the past few years, the company’s co-branded vests and jackets — particularly the fleece and puffer versions — have quickly become a staple in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street.”

Repeating for emphasis: “have quickly become a staple in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street.”

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/03/patagonia-shifts-policy-on-co-branded-products-silicon-valley-loves.html

Did an image search. Turned up what looked to be a lot of down vests. Their website shows they sell a down vest for $179 that is special because:

“The perfect warmth for just about everything, our classic Down Sweater Vest is lightweight and windproof with a 100% recycled polyester ripstop shell and 800-fill-power Advanced Global Traceable Down (goose down certified by NSF International from parent farm to apparel factory to help ensure that the birds that supply it are not force-fed or live-plucked).”

I’d as soon be emasculated as wear something advertised like that. I’ve never owned a down vest. When I worked outdoors in the north, I was making $20/day and couldn’t have afforded one. And I’ve always had too much sense to pay a premium price for “Advanced Global Traceable Down”! But I have never worked on Wall Street or in Silicon Valley. I don’t run with that crowd. Thank God!

Thanks, I just sent this to some of our younger generation family members, in the heavy duty construction business, auto maintenance an new auto business.

Then, to those of us whose parents/grand parents were in the business of finding oil, drilling or it, and refining it down for various uses. Those people helped us to defeat the Germans in two WW’. To help the Japanese in WWII.

Then, to usher in our great economic growth post WWII.

If we didn’t have a great amount of carbon fossil fuel in the USA, the ability to find it, refine it and use it.

None of the victories above would have happened.

Please check my tagline re Fossil Fuels:

Wonder what Patagonia uses to produce the synthetic fibers in their products? Unicorn farts?

They must require those same Unicorn farts to be used to power their suppliers equipment, which must also have been built and transported using Unicorn fart power. And of course you just know the corporate leadership all live in tiny houses, and travel in tiny vehicles all powered by Unicorn farts.

There is nothing this company sells that I would need so badly that I would but a single penny in their hands.

My wife bought me a Patagonia pull-over years ago because it’s cold where we live. Now that they’ve gone anti-American I think I’ll sew an “Exxon” patch to it and wear it around the local university hang-outs!

Agreed. Carhartt produces vests for many activities. I don't think soy swilling Patagonia wearers understand their vests are contraindicated around open flame.
