Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle differ on the approaches to ban plastic bags.
Lawmakers met in Hartford on Monday morning to discuss how to go about banning plastic bags in the state of Connecticut. About a dozen cities and towns have banned bags or are considering a ban.
Channel 3 met with dozens of people who agree that plastic bags are bad for the environment, but many can't seem to agree on the best way to ban them.
A public hearing on a proposed tax on plastic bags heard two bills. One bill would require stores to charge customers five cents per bag for single-use plastic bags, if passed. Governor Ned Lamont has called for it be raised to 10 cents.
Another bill would ban plastic bags completely within a two year period, forcing shoppers to use paper bags or bring reusable ones.
A group of seventh graders from West Hartford joined in the discussion on Monday proposing an immediate halt.
"We want it to go to a screeching halt," said seventh grader, Evan Piccioli. "We want to stop the plastic from getting into the waste stream because it hurts animals and it closes recycling plants."
And while paper bags may be a solution, the students said it may not be the best one as paper bags are more expensive.
"While its recyclable," said seventh grader, Charlotte Tucker. "It still ends up in the oceans and it's actually in the top ten things that end up in the great pacific garbage patch."

I'm sure it was also a honest mistake that the teachers of said 7th grade students forget to teach them most of the trash in the ocean is from 3rd world countries who don't care about the environment and that more and more of their precious recycling now gets dumped in the landfill or incinerated as it is worthless.
Sure, let’s use cloth “reusable” bags, which promotes E Coli and other food-borne pathogens because the envirowackos are too lazy to wash the bags.
The only reason we have plastic bags is because the azzhoes banned paper bags most places.
Aren’t plastic bags needed for wet garbage?
In Illinois, they have no intention whatsoever to “ban” plastic bags. They just plan on taxing them. A lot. State AND city. Great moneymaker. Don’t give a #$%# about the “environment”.
“The only reason we have plastic bags is because the azzhoes banned paper bags most places.”
Which were biodegradable and absolutely renewable. The paper industry blew that one massively, they should have fought tooth and nail.
Our paper industry is selling wood pellets to England since they banned coal.
I have seen some of the cloth bags some of these lefties use. They are all stained, probably never have been washed, etc.
I can see maybe using them for things like canned goods as you can pack a lot in them, but for thinks like meats single use bags are the best bet. Normally, I will re-use the “single use” bag the meat was bagged in to dispose of the trays, pads, films, etc. the meat was packed in.
That and they’re very convenient for taking my lunch/dinner to both of my jobs.
You are correct.
Rats. Always hard at work on the really important issues/SSSSS.
LAST CHANCE BATTLE Connecticut is working on TOLLING the interstates every 6 miles which will cost most residents in excess off 2K a year and create inflation at the cash register. Some low pay jobs will be abandoned and replacement workers will be hard to get. COMMIE DEMOCRATS are going to finally kill the state and import more illegals and then go belly up and be too big to fail and look for a FED handout. They stole the election. Is your State next?
Five years from now when we have driven the plastic bag manufacturers bankrupt we will be talking about banning paper bags because of deforestation or the Amazon or some such. A least this keeps the commies busy so they aren’t concentrating on destroying other stuff. For the record I really don’t like those flimsy plastic bags and I’m old enough to remember paper. I’m also old enough to remember the eco-tyranny that forced use to go plastic.
We are screwed. They are ruining these kids. I love how they say Pacific Ocean. Does it ever occur to them that its coming from third world countries? Probably not told that during the propaganda talks.
I see amazon sells plastic bags like the ones in the grocery. I wonder if I order a couple thousand, Id be able to use them. Obviously all grocery stores will turn into aldis.
Liberals were the ones that cried about trees decades ago so in order to shut them up the brought in plastic bags. Now liberals are still not happy. Bottom line is liberals will never be happy. They are bitter!!!!!
7th graders making policy?
OTOH...They know about as much about science as Bill Nye, and many times as much as those in congress
We live half way between a liberal town and a much more conservative one. I the liberal town the grocery charges $1 for a plastic bag. In the other town they are free. The free bag store is 4 miles further from our home. Guess where we shop.
I would test it out in minority communities first to see if it helps the litter problem
