Victor Davis Hanson on President Trump: ‘Chemotherapy to Kill Cancer of Permanent Political Class’

Victor Davis Hanson, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and professor of Classics at California State University, joined Wednesday’s edition of Breitbart News Daily to discuss his latest book, The Case for Trump.

He explained his motivation for writing the book.

“I wrote it because I felt the literature so far had been either ra-ra fanatically pro-Trump without a lot of analysis, or had been just Trump Derangement Syndrome stuff. I felt that people who had voted for him and expected that he would govern successfully were actually pretty astute, so I analyzed how he devised a geographical and political agenda different from pretty much 16 other gifted candidates, and then he beat somebody who would spend $2.5 billion to his $600 million, flip the electoral college, and then he would survive pretty much an orchestrated political effort to abort his campaign and then his presidency.”

“Contrary to the Never Trumpers who said he would govern as a liberal, or the left that said he would be so chaotic that government would all but collapse, if you look at all of the rubrics that we assess presidents by — unemployment, GDP, oil and gas production, regulations, judicial appointments, foreign policy — he’s had the most successful two years that we’ve seen in 25 or 30 years, maybe even longer.”

A little more from the article:

Trump is driving a political realignment and forcing reevaluations of deeply entrenched institutions, said Hanson.

“Henry Kissinger said in an Atlantic interview, every once in awhile, a guy like Trump comes along and shakes everything up, and makes us reexamine whether all these institutions — I guess he was talking about NAFTA and NATO and EU — are still doing what they were designed to do,” said Hanson. “Or maybe there’s no need for them, at least in their present iterations. I think he was very valuable.”

Hanson likened Trump to “chemotherapy” used to treat the “cancer” of America’s “permanent political class.”

“He’s sort of like chemotherapy,” stated Hanson. “Chemotherapy is a very toxic drug and it can kill the host — that’s us — but it’s not as bad as the cancer, and the cancer is this permanent political class of people who have contempt for people geographically … in between the two coasts, but also in class terms. I think he really hit something.”

Hanson also credited Trump with driving a a new national discourse on the status quo of both legal and illegal immigration and resulting demographic changes.

Thoughts:

1) That’s a very unfortunate choice of metaphor by VDH.

2) I’m afraid it’s going to take a lot more than Trump by himself to do that.

That metaphor is exactly right!!!

Our President is trying to rid our nation of the cancer that is destroying us AND still keep the Republic alive!!!!!

And btw, he is not doing this alone.

Millions of us pray for him daily because we know this is God driven!!!

I’m not getting chemo but I know people who are.
My father turned it down and was gone within days.

I think the metaphor touches nerves with too many is all.

A fitting model, but while chemo isn’t funny, Trump sure as hell is:

He is EXTREMELY funny.

He’s the Manhattan elite who relates as well to taxi drivers, cops, etc. as he does to fellow billionaires.

“To walk with Kings, but never lose the common touch...”

My only qualms are Jared, Ivanka and his sudden love for H1B’s.

Listened to the whole interview and highly recommend it.

VDH is not only smart and very knowledgable in history, but has the calm and logical demeanor that can actually pull more people into the Trump camp. People like Hannity only appeal to the base, and they’re already Trump supporters. VDH can be persuasive to independents and even moderate Dems who are want nothing to do with the crazy socialist trend.

It is a hard metaphor for many, although applicable here.

A good friend is going through chemo.....just started.....and it’s taking its toll on her.....
The first injection into her port has a name to designate the tremendous power of the medicine......I can’t remember the name but I bet there are some here who can.

Donald Trump has injected the deep state with a powerful application of justice, truth and cleanser!....
He is literally trying to save our country!

‘Chemotherapy to Kill Cancer of Permanent Political Class’
I’m afraid it’s going to take a lot more than Trump by himself to do that.
What it would take would be not only term limits, but a minimum age of 35 yo for all elected offices.

Term limits are necessary and would help significantly, but (Bernie Sanders notwithstanding) people who have had to spend 15 years trying to make a living outside of government - I should add the requirement that they not be government employees prior to election - should thin the herd of socialist ignoramuses in office.

Cortez is also a counterexample, I suppose . . .

I agree.. but any politician with the cajones to state One Nation Under God has my vote. What he has done for child trafficking and Israel seals the deal. I cannot believe how much I agree with any NYr.

Pols are less a problem than the millions of federal, state, county, and local employees.

Trump isn’t just at war with Fedzilla. He, and we, are at war with every public employee is this country who puts his/her own personal interests ahead of the nation’s.

The words do not bother me but it is going to take a lot more than Trump to root out this blight on our country. The political class is hoping to wait Trump out and return to their politics as normal. Trump getting a second term might give us another decade before the wheels come off, maybe two.
