I get tired of this claim that 90% of drugs come through the ports.
How is this KNOWABLE? You only know what you catch, not how much you missed.
I suppose you might be able to extrapolate drug user rates across the population, from other *estimates*, along with the average amount of drugs consumed per person (another *estimate*) and figure out the quantity of drugs that must be coming into the country to sustain that consumption, then compare to how much we catch through the ports on a regular basis.
Even then, we’d need to be actually catching close to 100% of the drugs coming across to know what percent was coming through the port. We know neither. The moment you don’t catch a payload you have no idea if it made it into the country through the port or the border.
Can somebody set me straight here? ...because I keep hearing this.
A drug trafficker would have to be retarded to send shipments thru a port of entry if the 90% number is even close to correct. Could be they are sending thru small decoy shipments so the large shipments could slide thru once the undermanned Border Patrol is tied up with the decoys.
