Otto Warmbier's parents have spoken out after President Trump stated that he took North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "at his word" after Kim denied any hand in Warmbier's death, which occurred after the American college student spent 17 months in captivity in North Korea and was returned to the U.S. in 2017 in a vegetative state.
"We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity. No excuses or lavish praise can change that."
Yes,he would be ultimately responsible. But IMO the families of the many Japanese people who were kidnapped from their neighborhoods and taken to NK have at least as big a gripe as does this family.
Suddenly, the President of the entire United States shares blame? Bullshite. The parents should just shut their pieholes for having raised a numbnutz kid, who probably thought NK was a better place to be. Serves him right.
What idiot moron would ever go to North Korea?
Im sorry but if you go to a place like North Korea somalia or Syria you get what you deserve You do Gooder fool
Trump did everything he could for Otto. He didnt have to as Otto was foolish and Obama had willingly abandoned him.
Now Trump is doing everything he can to secure lasting peace for the world.
The kid was tried and convicted when Obama was President.
Obama didn’t do anything to help.
Yeah, it was a little cringe inducing.
But for that idiot to even be in NK, much less taking souvenirs tempers my sympathy.
He was a 27 year old student with a minor in global sustainability. The trip was hosted by Young Pioneer Tours, which appealed to young Westerners with slogans such as "This is the trip your parents don't want you to take!" and advertised the trip as safe for U.S. citizens.
He may have been old enough to know better, but he appears to be a professional student with poor survival instincts.
I don’t give a rat’s ass if the President publicly calls Kim the greatest human who ever lived and recommends him for the Nobel prize.
The end game is to separate NK from its nukes and hopefully reunify the north and south.
Billions of lives are at stake. One stupid 27 year old sadly is just not important in this situation. Or the parents feeeelings.
I get your point but I think you’re blaming the wrong leader. Kim holds the cards to NK’s future.
I bet some people would have preferred we bomb Kim and his family. No guarantee of a better outcome that way. Someone even worse may have taken over.
If there’s a better way of getting this primitive regime to come around and possibly embrace a better future for its people; I don’t know of it.
Perhaps you have some ideas...
I agree with you and Trump had no reason to give that answer. I love Trump but I just dont understand it.
I also am appalled by most of the heartless, mindless and evil comments made on this thread. Its the devolution of Free Republic. Its never going to be the same as it used to be. Sad.
He was a couple of weeks past his 21st birthday when arrested, and 22 when he died 17 months later.
A dumb, stupid kid who believe the hyped in the travel ads.
What part of going to an known enemy’s country then stealing from them and getting caught are you having trouble understanding?
Yes, it’s tragic he ended up dying, probably from some abuse in prison. It’s also known this kid was soft and probably weak-minded.
Blaming Trump is as bad as not blaming the kid, his parents, and whomever told a young weak-minded kid that going into the Lions Den was a good idea.
Do you have skin in this game? Are you related to this family or did you lose a child under similar circumstances? Asking for a friend.
“Ive never been there but from what I know; the conditions are harsh for the people of NK so it stands to reason they would be triple harsh for any prisoners and double that for an American prisoner.”
Americans are incredibly naive about the conditions in foreign prisons. While I was stationed in Okinawa, I was tasked with being the USMC observer during the trial of an enlisted man who, while drunk in town, decided to “roll” a drunk Okinawan man.
Their territory, their rules. Neither the USA nor the USMC had any say during the trial. I reported what I observed, but unless things got really outrageous, the US Embassy would not intervene.
I was told that unless he had someone bringing him food from the outside, he’d have a had time surviving the two year sentence.
It’s not a cheap junk poster when it’s in NK.
There used to be a show called “Locked up Abroad”——most frightening thing ever.
Real hellholes in some countries.
.
I don't disagree with your assessment of the lying liberal lamestream media.
I do believe though that President Trump could've remained silent and let that silence speak for him. It would've been far more powerful. IMO.
My heart goes out to Otto Warmbier's parents.
Ultimately, he alone was responsible for his utterly stupid decision to travel to a communist hellhole that directly led to his death.
Everything else is superfluous.
