Otto Warmbier's parents push back on Trump over their son's death
Axios ^ | 3/1/19 | Orion Rummler

Otto Warmbier's parents have spoken out after President Trump stated that he took North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "at his word" after Kim denied any hand in Warmbier's death, which occurred after the American college student spent 17 months in captivity in North Korea and was returned to the U.S. in 2017 in a vegetative state.

"We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity. No excuses or lavish praise can change that."

It took me a few clicks to not jump to the typical emotionalism by both sides of this issue. Kim very well be truthful as the circumstances of death are very murky and President Trump has a way of language that truly riles so many. I don’t see this as a heartless slight to the family.

Hate saying this, but I think that he was in such poor condition that he was euthanized in some way. He returned to the States and was dead within, what, 5 days or less? Maybe they helped him to pass away through the withholding of water, or maybe through the administration of morphine? Otherwise, how did he live such a long time comatose in a third world h#ll hole but die soon after arriving here where we have the best medicine has to offer?

Keeping Kim in the dialogue re the future security of the US possibly at stake, Trump had no other choice but to respond the way he did.

No, he was with a travel group. He was detained as they were preparing to leave the country.

There was a lot of attention on the travel company when all of this happened.

POTUS Trump said that he took Kim “at his word” that HE knew nothing about it. POTUS Trump did not say he believed him nor did he defend him.

It was a setup question by a sneaky reporter and as usual what was said is not the same as what’s being reported.

Yeah, except he wasn’t on a respirator so stopping the life prolonging measures could have meant withholding food or water. And since he died so quickly, it probably was water.

Stop grinding your axe on FR. What is this deserve trash? When do any of us get what we think we deserve?
It’s not about deserve. We all do foolish things, when we get in trouble as a result it’s not deserved as much as it is a conclusion a reasonable person would have anticipated.

We don’t know why Otto wound up in such bad shape but I doubt the treatment was meted out to cause the outcome. Kim Jung Un’s own people are brutalized and many die. It’s SOP in a brutal dictatorship. How can we best assist in changing the situation? By saying this was very bad or by cajoling & pressuring the leader to take the first steps to a new way of life?

Wouldn’t death take a long time if just the feeding tube was removed? It was probably the withholding of water, then the administration of pain killers.

Maybe Trump didn’t want to give an easy lie. By bringing it up again Trump made his point with Kim. I don’t blame the parents for not seeing this in perspective but they should have had the sense not to respond to the press.

miserare is right.

We should give Hate a chance.

Screw nuclear disarmament, if we can find one single solitary thing about the North Koreans that we can be offended by... ;-)

“If Trump can get a deal that means NK will dump the nukes then that means that Otto did not die in vain.”

Yes.

Otto should not be dead, that is North Korea’s fault. But Otto should not have been in North Korea in the first place. That is his fault. Actions have consequences and I’m sorry if I’m not all worked up and hyperventilating over this one.

What they say is true. But I don’t see how it conflicts with Trump’s comment about what Kim said to him.

I think it’s a travesty that a reporter brought up this subject to distract from the matters at hand.

What happened to Otto was disgusting. BUT, is that something you really want brought up when you’re trying to take nukes from a child?

What was Trump supposed to do? Punch Kim in the nose and then ask him pretty please to disarm?

There will be plenty of time to hold Korea responsible for their numerous crimes against humanity. But let’s get the nukes first, how about it?

In the meantime, don’t take the troll bait.

He is an American whose travel to North Korea is banned. He was with a “travel group,” but illegally went with them over the border. The others WERE NOT US CITIZENS!

Don’t soft peddle stupid.

“They raised an idiot & then sat back and said nothing as their idiot child got the idea that going on vacation to a Stalinist dictatorship would be load of grin & giggles instead of slapping some sense into him! They are as much to blame as the NORKS”

Thank you! My feelings exactly.
