Trump's climate expert is wrong: The world's plants don't need more CO2
Mashable ^ | 2/22/19 | MARK KAUFMAN

Plants on Earth have flourished for hundreds of millions of years, yet President Donald Trump's pick to lead his new climate team insists that they need more carbon dioxide to thrive.

Princeton physicist and carbon dioxide-advocate William Happer has been selected to head the brand new Presidential Committee on Climate Security, reports The Washington Post. The atomic scientist -- who achieved recognition for his work on atomic collisions and telescope optics, not climate science -- maintains that the planet's atmosphere needs significantly more CO2, the potent greenhouse gas that U.S. government scientists -- and a bevy of independent scientists -- have repeatedly underscored is stoking accelerating climate change.

Because plants use carbon dioxide to live, Happer has said "more CO2 is actually a benefit to the Earth," asserted that Earth is experiencing a "CO2 famine," and concluded that "If plants could vote, they would vote for coal."

"If someone is going to claim it's good, it's incumbent upon them to show evidence."

There's a debate? Looks like Algore is wrong - again.

I’d like some evidence of what the natural temperature of Earth should be if humans never existed, since they pretend to know the extent of our impact. They have no flipping clue. If neither formula variable in the equation is known, how the hell can they know what’s truly impacting the result?

This stupid neo-Paganist gutter religion can’t be discredited enough.

Forests and jungles today are nothing compared to the Mesozoic era of the dinosaurs, when CO2 levels were much higher. So in fact yes, plants do thrive on CO2.

My memory says I’ve read that ancient earth atmosphere had a much higher CO2 content

How ridiculous. The earth has had far higher levels of CO2 in the geological past and CO2 is an absolute necessity for life. Since the eventual extinction of life is very likely to occur as a result of atmospheric CO2 decreasing below the threshold needed to maintain life, we should be promoting the use of fossil fuels to return at least some of the prehistoric CO2 to the atmosphere. We can’t return all of the CO2 to the air, as much of it has become bound up in biounavailable forms.

Plants need CO2 to grow..

It is well established that as CO2 in the atmosphere increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases. This is known as the CO2 fertilisation effect.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CO2_fertilization_effect

From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide.[3]

One related trend may be what has been termed “Arctic greening”. Scientists have been finding, that as northern portions of the planet warm up even as total atmospheric carbon dioxide increases, there’s been an increase in plant growth in these regions.[4]

Studies led by Trevor Keenan from the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) show that, from 2002 to 2014, plants appear to have gone into overdrive, starting to pull more carbon dioxide out of the air than they have done before. The result was that the rate at which carbon dioxide accumulates in the atmosphere did not increase during this time period, although previously, it had grown considerably in concert with growing greenhouse gas emissions.[5]

You are correct. CO2 levels of 270-280 in the 1900-1970’s level were near-deadly level 240 to 250.

Today’s level of 400 ppm, is allowing every plant on earth to grow 12% to 23% faster, higher, taller, wider with more roots, branches, leaves and fruits.

Plants on Earth have flourished for hundreds of millions of years, yet President Donald Trump's pick to lead his new climate team insists that they need more carbon dioxide to thrive.

This statement is just plain stupid, and provides more evidence that our country has been dumbed down.

It is true that plants convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, and have been doing that for hundreds of millions of years.

But what is our inventory of green plants on the Earth? How much carbon dioxide do they use? How much oxygen do they produce? What does deforestation do to our balance? Do we need more green plants to accommodate the "extra" carbon dioxide?

President Donald Trump's pick to lead his new climate team is correct in pointing out the crucial role carbon dioxide has on plant health and growth, and its role in mitigating claims of climate change.

Isn’t that their food? Wouldn’t this be like taking away a banquet and replacing it with gruel?

So... Their rebuttal is: More CO2 leads to fourth order effects like more droughts and more wildfires, which are bad for plants.

Fourth order effects are the weakest areas of climate prediction.

First order is how much the CO2 level will rise. That is uncertain.

Second order is how much the temperature will change. That is very uncertain. We do not know if it will continue to rise, remain steady, or fall.

Third order is how the weather patterns will be affected by the temperature changes. The uncertainty gets into fairyland at this level.

Fourth order is will those changes be good or bad? That is completely unknown, essentially unpredictable.

But the weird weather religion holds they absolutely know the answer to the fourth order of uncertainty.

The beneficial effect of CO2 on plant growth is well known and repeatable in the laboratory. It is a first order effect.

The people who wrote this article are ideological propagandists, not horticulture scientists. The fact is plants grow better with more CO2. If they didn’t, you couldn’t easily go out and buy CO2 systems for commercial greenhouses. These systems take CO2 levels to the 1000-1500 ppm range, a multiple of the 400 ppm in the atmosphere.

One such system

Search for greenhouse co2 system (I recommend DuckDuckGo). Lots of hits.

Bottom line - plants like CO2.

It’s repeatable in commercial greenhouses, to heck with the laboratory. And people actually spend money on systems to increase CO2 levels therein, to get the repeatable accelerated growth. See my previous post.

Unfortunately many who have bought into the Warmist Alarmist propaganda are immune to facts.

CO2 GRO Announces Dramatic Pathogen Reduction Results Using CO2 Foliar Spray on Cannabis

Foliar spraying of water, dissolved nutrients and chemicals on plant leaves has been used for over 60 years by millions of indoor and outdoor growers. To date, outdoor growers have not had any way to enhance plant CO2 gas uptake for faster growth.

This is also a greenhouse effect: greenhouses often increase CO2 levels.

Warmth + CO2 = better conditions for plants to grow, even with same soil and water

ADD water and introduce grazing animals and plants will do even better. Desert-like lands will be converted to pasture lands and support trees.

The truth is the green new deal is impossible without massive reduction in population and living standards. For various reasons, the promise of wind and solar has not been realized. And, the all-electric car and high speed rail have fallen flat.

At this time, it looks more efficient to pursue a combination of sequestering CO2 produced at coal-fired electricity-producing plants and certifying off-sets such as new growth of trees.

As dense as the waitress tip stealer is, does she realize that green energy in almost every way needs to rely on fossil fuel. This is why it is a scam. We all know to manufacture parts for wind and solar you need manufacturing which is run by fossil fuels. ALL ROADS LEAD TO FOSSIL FUEL! How do you intend to stop China Russia and the third world developing sh##hole countries from polluting? you cant! So we will slit our throats, kill our selves while the rest of the world moves forward and eventually does us in. These are the enemies within
