In my view it has gotten to the point it has largly by the world’s indifference.

A shocking turn of events given how peaceful and loving Muslims in general have shown themselves to be.

Ignorance, and merely using the past, and using sterotypes. I suggest you study the history of Chinese cultural genocide. It goes back much further than seen now in the modern era with the people of Tibet and the Uighur. The Han have always seen all other, even other “Chinese”, as “weaker” and “inferior”.

"You're using the past! Now study the past!"

Idiot.

Yes. I mispoke. You are using a generalized idea of the past, with respect to Islam, which has a lot to say for it. But that generalized idea does not fit the Uighur, either the religious role of Islam in their past, nor Islamic practices among them, nor their cultural attitudes and ethnic history - which is complex. Needless to say, what the past shows is that what the Uighur represent to China, just as with the Tibetans and the Fulan Gong and “house” Christians, is an identity that as much as it is central to an individual’s identity is a threat to the idea of the Chinese state as the “official” central identity necessary to not be seen as a threat to the dictatorship. The fact that they are nominal Muslims is incidental to the situation.
