Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., one of the few Democrats on Capitol Hill who has openly criticized the Green New Deal, renewed his attacks on the plan in a Wednesday interview -- calling it a "dream" and not a real deal.
With a vote being called by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in order to get Democrats on record regarding the controversial proposal, Manchin spoke out during a CNN interview.
The Green New Deal is a dream, its not a deal. Its a dream. And thats fine. People should have dreams in the perfect world what theyd like to see. Ive got to work in realities and Ive got to work in the practical, what I have in front of me, Manchin told anchor Chris Cuomo. Ive got to make sure that our country has affordable, dependable, reliable energy 24/7, but you cant just be a denier and say, Well, Im not going to use coal. Im not going to use natural gas. Im not going to use oil.
And you have to understand also that climate -- we talk about global climate, its the globe. Its not North American climate, its not the United States climate. Its the globe, Manchin continued. How do we bring on China and India and everybody else who are great users of carbon right now and polluters of carbon to be carbon-free also?
Manchin also weighed in on the expanding 2020 field and cautioned the running Democrats that they should campaign as a centrist since thats where most peoples lives are.

A Mary Jane Pipe Dream.
Its not a dream, its a nightmare.Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin slams Green New Deal: Its not a deal, its a dream
The conjunction of ruling and dreaming generates tyranny. - Michael Joseph Oakeshott
He has two options. Toe the line with the Rats, or change parties like Jim Justice did in WV. If he stays Rat and makes sensible statements, hell be annihilated by his cohorts. It must suck to be him right now.If this guy is not careful, hell get purged. Its what socialists do to those in The Party that are not ideologically pure enough. Run as centrists... what a heretic. - L,TOWM
Not a whole lot of room for ambiguity about this for him, Id say.
“Manchin wants to Gov of WV”
Then it might be to his advantage to switch to GOP, as Jim Justice did to win the governorship, per FReeper NorthMountain.
Why can’t people just do the right thing instead of calculating, manipulating, lying, etc.? Politics is so ugly.
Why should he switch? He just beat a Republican for his seat.
“if the Turtle gives Joe chairmanship of the energy committee in exchange for Joes flip to R.”
Interesting plot... Still, Manchin is a weasel.
As senator from West Virginia, a coal state, Manchin even though a Dem has to vote against the Green No Deal or he would be run out of W Virginia. If he were senator from Michigan he would support it. The guy has zero principles other than determining what is best for his political survival.
Joe, you are a traitor to the progressive cause - time for you to switch parties.
Jim Justice switched to DEMOCRAT to get elected. I dont trust him; Manchin is worse.
All these idiots are calling it aspirational.
I thought he had been governor of WVA....
So is Justice a Rat or a GOP now? I guess he’s a touch schizophrenic.
He was GOP up until 2015. He switched to ‘Rat to run for Governor. He got elected in 2016 as a ‘Rat, then switched back to GOP in 2017. He’s a weasel. We had a very good GOP candidate in Bill Cole. I’m not sure what sort of underhanded games Justice was/is up to.
Manchin has already been Gov. Senate is a step up. I still say he will switch eventually. He is not a leftist. He’s out of the coal fields born and raised under the Democrat family tradition. The D’s held the political power in WV for 80 years. The R’s finally got in power and are doing a great job. I’m asked Joe to switch parties several times. I have him under prayer. I believe that his Christian raising will win out.
Apparently Manchin wants to be Gov again.

I believe that if Joe got a lot of nice calls from people asking him to seriously consider switching parties, it would help push him to do that. He’s not a weasel. He’s a good man who served his state as a Democrat when it wasn’t a bad word. He has been uncomfortable since he won his Senate seat.
