Trump: People are 'full of crap' when they say wall hasn't made difference in El Paso

President Trump on Monday took aim at El Paso mayor Dee Margo (R), saying at a campaign rally in the city that "people were full of crap" if they said a border fence hasn't made a difference in reducing crime in the area.

"There’s no place better to talk about border security whether they like it or not," Trump said while speaking at the El Paso County Coliseum. "I’ve been hearing a lot of things. ‘Oh the wall didn’t make that much of a difference.’"

"You know where it made a big difference, right here in El Paso," Trump continued.

"And I don’t care if a mayor is a republican or a democrat, they’re full of crap when they say it hasn’t made a big difference," Trump said, referring to the criticism he received from Margo after he made similar claims in his State of the Union address.

The president added that he's been told by officials in the region that placing a wall in El Paso changed the "whole ballgame" when it came to crime in the city.

The comments came about a week after Trump used El Paso as an example of why walls worked during his State of the Union address.

"[El Paso] used to have extremely high rates of violent crime, one of the highest in the country, and considered one of our nation’s most dangerous cities," Trump said. "Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities."

Margo condemned Trump's comments shortly after the speech, tweeting that “El Paso was never one of the most dangerous cities in the US.”

He said last Saturday on CNN that he would "absolutely" correct Trump again if he repeated a similar false line about the city.

El Paso sits just across the border from the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez and is divided by the Rio Grande and a stretch of fence that was constructed more than 10 years ago.

Officials in El Paso County, Texas, passed a resolution earlier on Monday stating that the city is "disillusioned by President Trump’s lies regarding the border and our community."The resolution noted that the county's violent crime rate dropped 62 percent from 1993 to 2007, and that a fence wasn't installed until 2008.

I loved it.
Then he had the crowd answer whether it made a difference.
I remember when El Paso was considered one of the most dangerous cities in America.
I was only surprised to learn it’s now one of the safest.

TX mayors are elected on a nonpartisan basis, but most have open party allegiance. I did not know this El Paso mayor is a nominal Republican.

I absolutely love that this man speaks his mind, and doesn’t do it in namby-pamby politician-speak.

He says it like we would: “They’re full of crap.”

Perfect.

They have had a barrier in EP for decades, since Bush Sr. It started with a A tall chain link fence.

In the Obama era there were several articles I read crowing about how safe EP was because of a wall.

When I moved to NM in the mid 80’s, I spent a lot of time at Ft Bliss, TX. At that time, there was a 4’ high chain link fence along the Rio Grande that defined the border. Vehicle theft was so prevalent in this area that the shopping malls had security patrols on the roofs looking for people crossing the border to come and steal cars. Mexicans would shoot at cars on I -10 from the south of the border on a regular basis.

Trump would be better staying with the argument that the wall keeps crime out of El Paso rather than that it cut crime dramatically - the violent crime rate in the city fell by half from 2000 to 2006 (crime graph), but 2006 was a couple of years before the latest section of wall was completed - the crime rate there has remained essentially flat since then (the left's claims that it increased so many percentage points after the wall was finished are about nothing but statistical noise) - during the same period of time the murder rate in Juarez, on the other side of the wall, tripled - it's back down some now, but it's still, as Trump correctly said tonight, on the order of ten times or so what El Paso's is - in fact El Paso is rated as one of the safest cities to live in in the US - it all depends on how you massage the numbers......

It all depends on how you measure "dangerous" - but El Paso *is* where one of the cartels put up roadside billboards threatening local law enforcement officers and judges. The mayor can't sugar-coat that.

Maybe the President can offer to remove the wall?
He should make that offer everywhere to anybody on the border that says the walls don’t work ?

Trump is a real New Yorker. Not the limp wristed, Upper East Side latte drinking faggots like Schumer. This is a real New Yorker. The kind who say’s “Ya wanna play f**k around? We’ll play f**k around’’. And then you get your lights punched out.
