How far one would have to go before finding a suitable bank?

Not far at all - I’ve already started the migration process.

There’s local credit unions (that will offer you far better rates, service and terms) as well as online banks that will cover your ATM fees.

Best choice, a local bank. There are still plenty of them around and you can find a good one with a little due diligence. If you need money, the various reputable on line lenders offer better terms than the banks can do. As for national banks, avoid Chase and Wells Fargo like the plague. USAA works pretty well. The problem with the big national banks is that you aren’t their customer in their mind, you are just a chump. Their customers are the big boys.

That’s not the point here, at least as I see it. If he’s being 86ed for no good reason, he should not have to be chased from bank to bank in hopes of finding one that isn’t run by PC-driven prejudice.
