For the most part, they have been programmed by our educational system and media to do just that.
I have friends and family who have exhibited hints of this kind of behavior and I don't even think they are aware of just how strange it is.

Yeah, when they start to talk about targeted taxation, socialism, etc. I retort that once you give the government the right to take from you for the benefit of others it will always be able to find someone worse off than you to take everything you have. And when I say “you” I point directly to them, all rude like, to snap them out of it. As in YOU are their target too.
