Wisconsins two U.S. Attorneys have sent letters to 180 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
prescribing opioids without a legitimate medical purpose could subject them to enforcement action, including criminal prosecution.
They were identified through Medicare data for two years,

Kinda surprising...to me at least.I suppose that it’s possible that the fact that he gave me that many could be because he’s known me for years (I worked at that hospital..and with him...for decades) and, therefore, knew that I wouldn’t do anything stupid (or illegal).

Apparently some law went into effect last summer that requires when prescribing pain-killers that a physician must first consult the states database that supposedly has a complete list of all the prescriptions youve gotten in your life.

My son has brain cancer and is on many medications. He has used oxy for a long time. The prescriptions are short term and it is always a wait at the pharmacy while they check it out.
I think it is good that they are cracking down on all the junkies trying to get their fix but it is an inconvenience for patients who really need it.
I was in a bad accident about a dozen years ago. There was a lot of pain due to a crushed leg. I was prescribed plenty of oxy but after awhile they sent me to a pain specialist. He told me his job was to make me feel good. I could have received quite a bit if I wanted it but I only used it until the pain subsided enough for OTC meds to do the job.
I can see how people get hooked on it.
My sister has just had knee replacement surgery. Her doctor is not prescribing opiods for the pain...probably just because of the danger of getting in trouble with the DEA (just my opinion). She is suffering from unnecessary pain!
I had a bad motorcycle accident about 12 years ago
Was on Percocet for about a month
until I found out the bad news

It would have been much too easy to fall off the cliff
Switched to ibuprofen and Celebrex for a while
It was... unpleasant, but the right thing to do
It all has to do with the left breaking down every medical process there is so they can build their single payer systems.
My FnL was this man. Late onset Muscular dystrophy. Docs were afraid to give him needed pain meds. He did finally find a doctor that prescribed saboxine <-I think that is spelled correctly.
He would rock back and forth. Scowl on his face. When he would finally take his medication, he was a different man. He could hold a conversation, eyes would open, he would laugh and be more energetic.
Sucked.
What do you want to bet that 99% of these ‘prescribers’ are pain management doctors?
I worked in a big city ER for 20+ years. I've seen just about every painful illness and injury known to medicine.
There are most certainly more than a few people in this country who are in genuine, long term pain thanks to accidents, cancer and other reasons as well.
Of course we'd want to minimize the difficulties connected to narcotics but it *shouldn't* be done at the expense of those unfortunate people.
...What do you want to bet that 99% of these prescribers are pain management doctors?
I wouldt Take that bet
But some of the worst offenders are impaired themselves
And have lost the wisdom to know what harm they are doing others
I know, I have seen it first hand
My wife is suffering because of this bullshit.
“it is an inconvenience for patients who really need it.”
When doctors won’t prescribe them it, it’s a pain in the ass. I’m not worried about junkies who think they need it. I’m more concerned about the government making it so difficult for people who really need them.
Sorry to hear about your son. I’m sure that’s a difficult situation for all involved.

Been there, done that. I had to decide if I liked feeling good or if I wanted to not be high all the time.
90% of the deaths from opoids are black tar heroin, fentanyl. The DEA should be a convenience store.
“Is it because they are cowards and would rather terrorize doctors and providers?”
That and the politicians are likely paid off by the cartels. I’ve said it before, want to put an end to the opioid “crisis”? Seal up the southern border tighter than Dick’s hat band.
Fentanyl? The same and inspect every container arriving from China.
I will win that bet then. From the article:
“The 2016 CDC opioid guideline is voluntary and only intended for primary care physicians. Longfield said warning letters were not sent to pain management physicians, oncologists or those working in hospice or palliative care, where higher opioid doses may be needed to control pain.”
I am way the hell over their war on patients.
If you believe that will remain that way for long you probably believed "If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor".
I have chronic pain, have had for many years, three spinal surgeries including having four cervical disks replaced and I can tell you that this shit is already filtering down to my pain management doctor. But hey you read it in an article so why believe someone actually living it.
