No Heat for Days at a Jail in Brooklyn Where Hundreds of Inmates Are Sick and ‘Frantic’
NY Times ^ | 2/01/19 | Annie Correal

More than a thousand inmates have been stuck in freezing cells at a federal jail on the Brooklyn waterfront that has had limited power and heat for at least this week, according to federal public defenders and leaders of the union representing the jail’s corrections officers.

“They just stay huddled up in the bed,” said June Bencebi, a case manager at the jail and the treasurer of the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents about 500 corrections officers at the jail.

The jail, the Metropolitan Detention Center, houses more than 1,600 inmates and lies in an industrial swath near the waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Some inmates are linked to high-profile drug trafficking and terrorism cases, while others are comparatively anonymous New Yorkers awaiting trial.

“”Jails aren’t supposed to be resort hotels. They are supposed to be incentive for people not to go there, or not to return after they get out.””

Several on here are making the claim of innocent until proven guilty and I’m a full believer in that but one has to understand why these people are in this detention center. Either they’re a flight risk and the judge is holding them without bond or they’ve burned every bondsman around and nobody will get them out. Hell their own families aren’t even getting them out! Cuddle up with Bubba until they get the electrical fixed, that’s what our boys in Germany did, two to a foxhole.

“”I think there will be lawsuits””

Well of course there will be, these are the same folks who file suits over smooth vs creamy Peanut Butter. Lawyers are coming out of the woodwork and headed that way as we speak.

So 49 degree’s in NY is different than 49 degree’s in Montana? It’s enclosed the water makes no difference. It’s just not that cold! Only thing worse than crybaby prisoners is the lawyers that defend their BS.

Our correctional officers here in this county spend much of their time outside patrolling perimeters in much worse weather. I’ve spent weeks in Colorado, Oregon and Wyoming hunting daily in far worse conditions, the officers are in no danger safety or health wise. The NYT blew this out of proportion making it sound like they were freezing to death, the media run with it and the lawyers are drumming it up to even higher levels and some here jumped on it like a bass on a spinner bait. Good grief!

Yes I guess it is different if not dressed or used to it. As a northerner, I always have a good laugh visiting Florida in the winter. If they have a cold snap for a day at 55 they are wearing snow jackets and gloves while I’m in t shirt and flip flops.

I guess i will politely agree to disagree. I believe people who are incarcerated are entitled to basic care. Remember what one of the COVINGTON boys yelled out “they are human, too”.

“”Were you paid well working on those rigs? Husband worked for big oil company.””

Not that that has a damn thing to do with the article but yes I was and have been doing it for 45 years along with millions of others. Now those who fought in Germany during WWII didn’t get paid for chit, they were drafted and many of them did freeze to death. You really want to go this direction? Our troops have fought and died in conditions far worse.

Nothing to do with it? We’re only talking 49 degree’s, no wind chill, no rain and no snow. My God how did the human species ever survive below 49 degree’s, it’s a miracle we’re not extinct.

Comrade DiBlasio is just giving the Zeks the “Comrade” treatment. Next he is apt to double their wood cutting quota and halve their food allotment.

Sounds like some Memphis OLDER SCHOOLS no one has bothered to put in new AC/HEAT in.

The Utility company is cutting off those who chose Pay as You go by the day. And charging them a $89 reconnect fee. IDIOTS couldn’t come up with the Security deposit and this was sold as a way to have utilities, you pay daily, many times over the cost of what a Utility bill is normally.
