The US Super Bowl halftime show, one of pop music's most visible gigs, this year went from highly coveted to largely unwanted, leaving the NFL scrambling for takers as a cultural firestorm over social justice rages.

Prominent artists including Rihanna, P!nk and Cardi B reportedly turned down the offer to headline Sunday's championship game between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, amid the controversy over racially charged police brutality protests spearheaded by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Dave Chappelle makes fun of gay people. That is not allowed.
Queer trumps black now.

And Family Guy says they will back off from making fun of gays (a show that has made fun of everyone...and even was fair enough to have Rush Limbaugh be a guest star...)

Any race controversies in baseball—anthem protests? So far one player, a forgettable Oakland A, has taken a knee and that was about it.

You know, every comedian has at some point made fun of gay people. They may have to dig far back.

I would prefer a good Country and Western star, myself.

I’m with you. Can’t understand why anyone actually cares. How many times have the Patriots been caught cheating? Violating NFL rules by spying on and filming opposing teams’ practices, deflating the football so it’s more “comfortable” for Brady and jamming opponents booth-to-field comms (they’re not the only team to do that). How much more have the Patriots and other teams done that the public never knew?

Doesn’t anyone wonder how and why clearly obvious calls aren’t made? But question the officials and you’re fined; like the pope, the referees are infallible. It’s part of NFL dogma. Why aren’t certain calls and non-calls challengeable and why do they just seem to be made (or not) at points when they clearly influence the outcome of a game?

Remember the NBA ref who was being prosecuted for gambling and influencing the outcome of NBA games? After he threatened to expose corruption in ALL professional sports, the story “mysteriously” disappeared. There is WAY too much money on the line for professional sports not to be corrupted, but we cheer for our favorite team of overpaid “professional athletes” and pretend it’s legit.

Go ahead, color me jaded...

Well, they're artists. So maybe they draw water color stick figures.

Smiling at events like this surrounding the Super Bowl since I don’t watch TV.

Here’s an idea. Boot the band, send the players home and shut down the stadium. Now, is everyone happy?

“I would prefer a good Country and Western star, myself.”

What about some of the newer country stars that the young people are also interested in?

The Super Bowl is the biggest gig in the world. As an entertainer you are playing to the largest audience you will ever play to in your career. The price for the ticket is the biggest single box office take($2500+/ticket x 80,000) every year. You would think entertainers would be jumping at the chance for that kind of exposure.

“A lot more than if New Orleans and KC were playing.”

I see where you’re going with that, and I agree. Follow the money.

".... UEFA Champions League final...."

I have no idea what that is. Please speak English. :-)

I am not a sports fan at all, despite being a top athlete in high school and playing football and wrestling my first couple of years in college. I competed in 10k and marathon road races for forty years and played a pretty good game of golf until I retired and took up cattle ranching 10 years ago.

I've never had any interest in watching sports, only participating myself. Too many other things to do besides parking myself in front of the TV all weekend.

"...until the league changes their policy and supports players' constitutional right to protest, no artists should agree to work with the NFL."

Hey, moron, there is no Constitutional right to protest in a private setting.
