CHICAGO — "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett has refused to turn over his cellphone to detectives, who are investigating the alleged attack that sent him to the hospital earlier this week, Chicago police said Thursday.
The actor declined to share telephone records that could show he was speaking with his manager just as the alleged assault happened early Tuesday morning in Chicago, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News.

If not because of the hoax, then because as a gay man, he probably has all kinds of perversion on there which would get him in deep trouble with either the law, or the public if it were to find its way into the open.
I wish Trump hadn’t commented on it. It gave the hoax even more life the moment the whole story was disintegrating.

Oh, no doubt. I wouldn't even be surprise if he had kiddie porn on it. But the police were only looking to confirm a phone call, which is minimally intrusive. Even a non-techie like me could do that.
Why would they need his phone to know if he was using it and who he was speaking to at the time of the alleged attack? They can get that information from his phone company.
Jussie seems just too friggin’ stupid to orchestrate a believable hoax.

If he was using his phone at the time of the attack, the phone would probably pick up what the attackers were saying to him (i.e., "MAGA").
That's the action they take for a hostile witness or suspect. They expect a reporting victim to be very compliant and cooperative with requests for corroborating evidence.
My guess is that Jussie probably has the Human Rights Campaign, SPLC and ACLU on speed dial for coaching on just this kind of hoaxing.
one comment i saw (not on Free Republic) was that this young man was at a bar/tavern known for homosexual hookups and that there was an altercation at that establishment between him and and a “couple” there.
no way to know if this is true, but it might make sense as to how he could be identified as a cast member of the show...he would not be wearing a ski mask in a bar.

I also noticed that the NBC report does not mention the rope that was tied around Jussie Smollett's neck that the Police actually witnessed when they responded to his 911 call.
Trump should order the FBI to interview Smollett, since hate crimes are a federal offense, too.
"Lying" to the FBI is a felony, as four defendants in the Russia Collusion Hoax have discovered.
Not to mention right after the savage attack supposedly happened, he was seen strolling into his building and by security as if nothing had happened. No limp, no holding his hurt ribs, no sign of distress whatsoever

why would the police need to subpoena information that would supposedly corroborate a “victim”’s story?
i think most phones nowadays also track where you’ve been.
if the “rumor” i saw earlier is correct, that tracking information just may confirm the “victim” was at a bar “ahem” that uses alcohol as a pretext for homosexual encounters...
he also may have material on there that leads to information about illegalities like drug use, etc...
