Who’s Afraid of Howard Schultz?
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 30, 2019

Posted on 01/31/2019 6:13:03 AM PST by reaganaut1

The way progressives are denouncing Howard Schultz, you’d think he is Donald Trump’s first cousin. The former Starbucks CEO said Sunday he might run for President as an independent in 2020, and Democrats have since been shrieking like teenagers at a horror movie. They seem to fear a policy debate, which is exactly why a Schultz candidacy could be good for the country, including Democrats.

Senator Elizabeth Warren wasted no time on Twitter deriding “billionaires who think they can buy the presidency to keep the system rigged for themselves while opportunity slips away for everyone else.” The Democratic pundit class, which means nearly every pundit, rushed to say Mr. Schultz should stick to grande cappucinos and leave politics to the professionals who . . . lost to Mr. Trump.

They’re trying to bully Mr. Schultz out of running, but along the way they’re making the case for why he should. Take economics, where Ms. Warren, Sen. Kamala Harris and other Democrats wants Americans to shut up and jump on their bullet train to Bernie Sanders’ utopia. On policy Mr. Schultz is closer to a John F. Kennedy or Bill Clinton Democrat.

He grew up in the projects in Brooklyn, worked in sales at Xerox and built his global coffee company from next to nothing. “I thought that was the American dream, the aspiration of America,” he said this week. “You’re going to criticize me for being successful when in my company over the last 30 years, the only company in America that gave comprehensive health insurance, equity in the form of stock options, and free college tuition?”

One of Mr. Schultz’s supposed sins is saying that “I don’t think we want a 70% income tax in America.”

Pocahontas is nauseating as usual. If Schultz runs, he will be able to use his money to reach voters, but they will decide who they want for President.

Boy we could fill in the blank on this one. How about fake Indian white privileged chicks who think they can buy the presidency? I don't think much of Schultz but as far as I can tell he is a self made man who didn't have to fake who he is in order to move up the corporate ladder.

Ah, Starbucks starting conversations again? Vote Schultz on the cups?

Yeah, I know, supposedly illegal. I remember 1976 Jimmy Carter campaign getting a cease and desist order on including a package of two or three peanuts with his campaign stuff, even though the package had “Vote for Jimmy Carter” or the whatever on it.

Blame others for what you are doing.

If you use the scenario of Warren or Harris...then Schultz consumes probably 50-percent of the Hillary votes of 2016. With Bernie? I have doubts that Schultz lay out socialism cards to draw the pro-Bernie vote.

As for GOP votes going from Trump to Schultz? If you look over the twenty-odd positions of Schultz, there’s only three or four that might attract GOP votes. The anti-gun chatter? It won’t sell. So I’d predict no more than 5-percent of Trump 2016 votes flipping to Schultz.

In the September/October campaign period....Schultz only hurts the Democratic brand.

Trump goaded Schultz nicely. He immediately said that he does not have the guts to actually run. Schultz is now being humiliated by the same Democrats he personally financed generously. He has been Trumped. Soon he will be crawling back into his cup. Nevertheless by 2020 this self loathing wimp will be again financing creepy Democrats.

If nothing else, this should be a real education for people like Shultz and Bloomberg. Both are Jewish billionaires who lean left (Shultz more than Bloomy). However, the Progressives don’t care. They will skewer them just the same — and probably claim they’re Hitler before all is said and done.

ANY third party candidate is good for Trump. Name a candidate who will peel Trump supporters away from him. It’s a battle for the non-committed, and divvying up those who opt for “not-Trump” among other candidates is a big advantage. No matter how many other candidates there are, the only choices are Trump and Not-Trump.

Strange thing about Leftists, they may be smart, maybe even super smart, as these two are.

But wisdom? They have none.

These guy are unable to learn the things you're talking about.

Democrats know full well that most of Ross Perot’s votes came at the expense of George Bush and not Bill Clinton. Schultz may take some votes from Trump but they’re afraid most of his votes would be moderates or Never Trumpers mostly at the expense of who ever their nominee is.

What % of the types of voters who were Bernie bots who then voted for Trump can articulate a rational guiding political philosophy? Supposedly the dumbest voters of the 10% or so who make up swing voters decide all presidential elections.

Of course a 3rd party candidate from the left sucks up more dem voters. I doubt if the dem machine will ever let it happen.

Pretty much. And I didn't even known his company gave comprehensive health insurance and free college tuition, not to mention equity in the company. Pretty impressive just for making coffees.

I agree. Someone else made the point that, even if the Left demonizes these guys (which it will), they will still come crawling back into the fold. Kind of like the Stockholm Syndrome. As smart and rich as they are, they may feel they have no choice.

Yup. Because Trump is the quintessential third party candidate. He just happened to run under the Republican banner.
