Native American activist Nathan Phillips has violent criminal record and escaped from jail
Washington Examiner ^

Nathan Phillips, the Native American activist who falsely accused Covington Catholic High School students of blocking him during a confrontation he initiated, has a criminal record — including assault and escape from jail — and appears to have misrepresented his military service.

Phillips, 63, suggested high school junior Nick Sandmann, the teenager at the center of the viral encounter after separate D.C. rallies, face expulsion for failing to "accept any responsibility” or apologize to Phillips publicly.

In his own teenage years and early 20s, Phillips, using his adoptive name Nathaniel R. Stanard, was charged with escaping from prison, assault, and several alcohol-related crimes, according to local news reports at the time from his hometown of Lincoln, Neb.

Phillips, who was 19 at the time, was “charged with escaping from the Nebraska Penal Complex where he was confined May 3,” according to a May 9, 1974, article in the Lincoln Star. The court approved a bond of $500 and set a preliminary hearing for May 14.

He pleaded guilty to assault on June 19, 1974, and was fined $200. In addition, he was charged with underage possession of alcohol in 1972, 1973, and 1975, as well as negligent driving. A destruction of property charge against him was dropped in August 1973, but Phillips was sentenced to one year probation for a related charge of alcohol possession by a minor. In December 1978, he was charged with driving without a license.

Phillips also appears to have misrepresented his military service in the U.S. Marines. In April, he was quoted by Vogue as saying: "You know, I’m from Vietnam times. I’m what they call a recon ranger. That was my role."

In fact, Phillips spent most of his time in the Marines as a refrigerator technician after initially being an anti-tank missileman for four months. Phillips, then named “Stanard,” was not deployed outside the U.S. and never saw combat, according to the Marine Corps. Military records provided to the Washington Examiner show that Phillips served in the Marine Corps Reserve between 1972 to 1976 and reached the rank of private, E-1, on April 18, 1975.

The Lakota People’s Law Project, some of whose members participated in the Indigenous Peoples' March with Phillips and later encountered the Covington students who had taken part in the March for Life, described Phillips as a Vietnam veteran.

That was incorrect, but Phillips himself appeared not to have claimed he was in Vietnam, repeatedly describing himself in interviews as a “Vietnam times veteran." In 2000, however, he described himself to the Washington Post as having been "a Marine Corps infantryman," without mentioning that for the vast majority of his service he had been a refrigerator technician.

Phillips did not respond to questions about his military record discrepancies or his criminal record.

n an interview on Sunday with Rewire News, Phillips criticized the Covington Catholic students for their behavior, saying Native American children would not be allowed to act that way.

“We’re indigenous. We’re different than that. When we see our youth going the wrong way, we will go up and say, 'You are doing the wrong thing there nephew, or grandson,'" he said. “This is just the wrong way. I tell them, 'This is the way you have to behave. This is wrong, this is right. You gotta do it a certain way. We have protocols.'”

“You know, if [the Covington Catholic student] was my child, I would not be happy with the school officials right now to allow my child to behave that way. I don’t care if my child is that way,” added Phillips. “When he’s out in public, he’d better behave.”

Phillips has described being forcibly taken from his birth family at the age of 5 and struggling with alcoholism as a young man before becoming sober. He has also spent much of his life agitating for Native American causes and seeking his own identity as a member of the Omaha Tribe.

He told CNN this week: "I was raised away from my family. I was put in foster care and so I didn't have a traditional indigenous upbringing. I was brought up just like these young guys were brought up. Well, maybe I wasn't Catholic school, but I was public school.

The Omaha don’t question it and tribal membership is up to them.

That high schooler read him as violent, banging his hateful war drum. He thinks now he should have walked away but a guy thinks defense. He thinks let me de-fuse this. That was what he did

>>I want to see what race he’s listed at in his military paperwork.<<

Oh, he’s an injun alright. I’m injun too and believe me if I thought for a moment he was lying about that I’d bust his ass for it too.

His family is rather well known on the Omaha reservation. He’s not highly thought of, he’s an AIM agitator. That was the AIM song he was singing when he was banging the drum in that kids face. AIM are a bunch of radicals, some of them murderers.

I’m just thankful I come from a peaceful, conservative tribe. We don’t like crap like this. Guys like this give indians a bad name.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering where the bottom of the barrel of his misrepresentations about himself were... with every other claim being false, it was natural to wonder if this one was also.

I have known black men of his age who have had alcohol problems and looked similar, and his skin is dark enough to be black, and we know that leftists have no problem whatsoever fraudulently misrepresenting their own race in order to push grievances, and all that adds up to reason to doubt everything.

The kid has bad teeth. So he smiles with his mouth closed. Looks like a smirk. Supposedly the kid is Jewish. Not sure about that.

It was an in your face provocation. Gas lighting. Sort of what the leftists paid people to do at trump rallies.

Btw that’s also the purpose of the black fake Israelites. They yell and try to get people on camera responding in kind then post it publicly to try to destroy their lives. Nice folks.

Non combat or not it’s a 64 year old former marine in the face of a skinny teen kid. The kid didn’t know what to do.

There’s no angle photo where you see the guy who filmed it had what looks to be an Antifa scarf they use to cover their faces. He’s not wearing the scarf but he’s smiling at the kid. So the kid might have reacted in kind to that or just the absurdity of it all.

The day after Nathan Phillips harassed the kids at the Lincoln Memorial, he attempted to disrupt Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/nathan-phillips-rally-attempted-to-disrupt-mass-at-dcs-national-shrine-91038

Frustratingly, there is no indication that the Catholic News Agency thought to save a copy of the incriminating video that activist Sega Milli Millz made of the event. She posted it to Facebook, but it looks like she subsequently removed it.

Of course he does. He is a leftist who wants to hurt, destroy and murder you and the second you fight back, he will recoil into his weaponized victimhood and run to the CNN cameras to show how the white man wants to murder him.

Go buy a MAGA hat folks and plan to fight back when attacked. You are going to be pilloried in the leftist press reguardless so you mind as well do it fighting back against your leftist neighbor.

Phillips is someone over acting on a guilt and shame complex, pretending he needs to “atone” for a personal past that (1) was not started by his own will, and (2) was nothing to actually be ashamed about.

So being in the reserves makes me think he had time to get jailed. Doesn’t look like ‘75 was a good year for him. But, he never got further than E-1? Did he have a reduction in rank for being AWOL? In any case, a proven liar.

He definitely is one or both (I say both) of two things:

1) A dimwit who could not get beyond E1

2) A Brig Rat who did get beyond E1 but kept getting busted back to E1

I think he is a dimwit Brig Rat. I knew a couple of Brig Rats, and they weren’t universally stupid, just engaged in bad behavior out of weakness (such as being UA)

But there are also dimwit Brig Rats out there too, and I think he may have been one.

If he wasn’t such a Leftist piece of crap, I might well sympathize and think “Well, the service can be hard, but it is harder when you are a stupid dimwit...”

I think the kid was just somewhat awkwardly confused, the way you might be when an odd person comes up to you on the street and begins talking to you.

My buddy and I went out to eat a couple of months back, and when we were leaving, a young woman (maybe in her twenties) walked up and began talking to us. I generally don’t just brush people off, and kind of responded as we walked, and she was telling us she was from Russia, and other things...but...even as adults it was awkwardly weird, and I am comfortable speaking to nearly anyone.

If I were my 16 year old self, and a guy who looked like that came up to me banging his drum singing “Hey ya ya ya he ya ya ya hey ya ya” etc, I might simply freeze up with a frozen smile on my face the way that kid appeared to do, all the while thinking “WTF is this?”

Hell, out of basic doesn’t everybody go to E-2. I know guys who were in for 8 years and fine being E-3. Then the “up or out” initiative kicked in and a lot of them got the boot.

Chief Shipley was looking at the FOIA documents, and his tone of voice and eybrow motion clearly indicated contempt...he knows what kind of guy this is:

“Hmm...let me see...he was in from 1972-1976...and...he was an E1. Hmmm...”

Yeah. When I left Boot Camp I went from an E1 (Airman Recruit) to an E2 (Airman Apprentice) so I think you are correct...pretty sad to be an E1 after four years.

He is obviously a Dipstick.
