Brexit: Military reservists on standby in event of no deal

Reserve military officers could be called up for a year of service as part of government plans for a no-deal Brexit.

It comes after the defence secretary said 3,500 troops were "held at readiness" to help if the UK crashes out of the EU.

The official call-up order was made in a ministerial statement on Thursday.

Labour, which is calling for a no-deal to be ruled out, said the move showed the prospect was a "serious threat".

Reservists, who have military training but also hold civilian jobs, will make up one in ten of the troops prepared to be deployed before the scheduled Brexit date of 29 March.

Under the Reserve Forces Act, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson can call on the officers to be sent "anywhere in the world" if it is "necessary or desirable".

The act says this can be done "for the alleviation of distress or the preservation of life or property in time of disaster or apprehended disaster".

A lot of folks want the UK to rejoin EFTA to preserve its access to the European single market.

It was a founding member of EFTA. The difference with the EU is while the latter is more of a political union, EFTA remains an economic trading bloc.

Either that or a Swiss model of integration with Europe are post-Brexit options for the UK.

Brussels is doing to Britain what Hitler tried but failed. It is a good thing that England in 1940 did not think it was too inconvenient to fight off an invasion and were willing to sacrifice to stop it.

Just like the Y2K scare, a no-deal Brexit would be very anti-climatic.

Not necessarily ‘against’ anybody. it’s more likely to be to support the civil authorities in the event of any breakdown of essential services, temporary or otherwise - as already occasionally happens when the military are called in for support in civil emergencies.

Ironic that self-labeled “Icons” like France and Britain are gathering forces to quash their citizens...
