Lin-Manuel Miranda pushes back on criticism over congressional delegation's Puerto Rico trip

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- "Hamilton" star and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda on Monday praised a delegation of congressional Democrats for traveling to Puerto Rico, despite criticism over their trip's timing during a partial government shutdown.

"I'm very proud to work with the Latino Victory Fund because you're here to work, despite what anyone might claim," said Miranda during a speech at the progressive organization's summit.

"I know you all saw the blue tarps when your plane landed in Puerto Rico," Miranda told the members of Congress in the audience, referring to temporary roof coverings provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to homes that lost their roofs after the September 2017 hurricane.

A group of 36 Democrat lawmakers traveled to the Caribbean territory to attend dual conventions held in San Juan by Bold PAC, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) campaign arm, and the Latino Victory Fund (LVF), which is dedicated to expanding Latino political participation.

President Trump tweeted a "Fox and Friends" headline Monday, that read, “Dems in Puerto Rico as Shutdown hits day 24.”

But Miranda said the territory needs the attention from members of Congress.

"We brought 'Hamilton' here to bring a spotlight to Puerto Rico," said Miranda.

Miranda said Friday's opening night in San Juan, a run featuring the show's original Broadway cast, re-energized his hopes for the future of the island.

"I get more energy from Puerto Rico than I will ever need in my life," said Miranda.

Miranda also recounted his experience to bring his hit musical to the island where he spent summers with relatives as a child.

"We announced we were bringing Hamilton to Puerto Rico but in reality we had no idea if we could bring Hamilton to Puerto Rico," Miranda said, recalling the days after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Puerto Rico was essentially cut off from all outside communication for several days, isolating those on the island from their friends and family stateside.

"And then Hurricane Maria happened, and it threw everything into doubt. I don't mean like our plans, I mean life itself," he said.

Miranda added he was impressed by the efforts of people on the island to make do under difficult circumstances.

"You will not meet a more resilient people on the face of this Earth than the people who live on this island, but they shouldn't have to be this resilient," said Miranda.

When are these 'resilient' people going to take responsibility for their own problems and enact solutions?

Why does Puerto Rico stumble from crisis to crisis?

Instead of trying 'spotlight' problems in Puerto Rico why not try to solve them?

If peurto ricans are so “resilient”, why are they such parasites on the American taxpayer? This has gone on forever. Being “resilient” does not mean being a “gibmedat”.

Are these examples of the ‘energy’ this little puke absorbs in PR:

Puerto Rico has long had one of the highest murder rates in the country, almost all of it attributable to gang violence. But a recent spree of brazen daylight killings, some of which were captured on video and widely shared on social media, have shaken the population and worried local and federal law enforcement officials who thought they had seen everything in the roiling, populous city of San Juan.

On Jan. 6, several men engaged in a morning shootout on the service road of a major thoroughfare in Isla Verde, near the airport, leaving one man dead. On Wednesday morning, a gas station security camera in Dorado captured a gunman in a ski mask who calmly walked up to a Honda, fired at its driver and left.

A better idea, have the US declare Porto Rico independent and sovereign from the USA. Then present it with a bill for the costs of shoring up its incredibly dysfunctional financial system. See how often this little sh*t wants to go there then.

I quite agree. When we annexed PR in 1898, it was too small to be an independent nation. Now, the Caribbean has lots of nations much smaller (both size and population) than PR. Let them go and Godspeed.

Miranda and Puerto Rico’s usual suspects are pushing congress for a block grant of even more relief without any oversight. None. Just hand the money over to them and GTFO.

Miranda, with his screwy first name, just wants more attention for his expiration dated play.

And give the PRs more exposure to crying and complaining.

It’s what they do!

They (Puerto Rican’s) have changed the meaning of their country’s name from Door TO Riches, to Door to America’s Riches.

As for lin-Manuel - he’s another ignorant lefty who doesn’t get that the optics of this DimocRat junket are horrible.

Especially during their shut down.

I saw the play Hamilton, on a bootleg video someone had.

I sure don’t see why this guy is acclaimed as some genius.

In fact they intentionally had minorities play the parts of people who were white.

How much praise would you be seeing, for someone who wrote some play about Martin Luther King and the civil Rights movement, and had an all white cast for people who were black???

Yet this guy does a play with a minority cast, and is acclaimed. Go figure.

I was assigned and lived in PR 35-40 years ago and enjoyed it. I was the only non-Puerto Rican in the small town in which we lived and they were all great - never had a problem. During that time they had a plebiscite in which the population could vote for the current status, statehood or independence. Those voting to be independent were less that 1% of the population. It turns out it was only the PR communist party wanting independence and they were heavily supported by Castro’s communist party. They also were the loudest, with violent protests, dynamiting communication towers, etc.

Racist Lin Manuel banned all white actors from auditioning for parts in “Hamilton.” Nice.

Out of curiosity, I started to watch a Youtube video of the opening number in “Hamilton”: predictably, an all black cast immediately launched into ghetto rap music, immediately started rapping about slavery. Yep that’s the most important thing about the founding of our great country-—NOT!!

I saw all I needed to see of the video, 90 seconds of this cr@ap was too much for me.

We have much work to do, Dilbert.

We CAN do it. If we maintain our cool superiority in policy and have strong leaders coming up, Mark Meadows, Jim Jordan, the whole freedom caucas and the new, hopefully, sane senators in place.

I’ve seen what pubbies can do if, big IF, we STOP CRITICIZING OUR OWN. I wish we were as loyal as the dims are. That is the only thing we should emulate.

let’s be honest here. The PRs are not so resilient as they are stupid! If you live in or near the paths of MOST hurricanes that wander across the Atlantic, you must suck it up when one hits you.

Stop crying to us on the mainland, (I’m in Florida) and take care of your own business when you are wrecked by a hurricane.
First on that business agenda is to rid yourselves of the corruption that permeates your government. And, don’t host a Demoncrat group of partyers. The “optics” are bad for you and the Damnocrats.
